Information on Roses

Rosa

Roses are bursting with beauty and meaning, the rose is the world's favourite flower and with such a wide array of colours, varieties and fragrances, it is easy to understand the universal appeal.

The rose has been used throughout history as a symbol of love and war and today there is thought to be over 150 different species being grown across the globe.

The War of the Roses in 1455-1487 saw the House of Lancaster represented by a red rose and the House of York represented by a white rose. When Henry VII won the war he merged the red and the white together and created the Tudor Rose, the rose of England.

The era of the modern rose was established in 1867 with the introduction of the first hybrid by Jean-Baptiste Guillot. All roses before this are now known as Old Garden Roses whilst any after that date are called Modern Garden Roses.
