Golden Barrel Cactus Indoor Plant Grusonii 12cm Pot
  • £9.99

Currently bang on trend with their own Instagram following, this golden barrel cactus is suitable for beginners as well as experienced indoor gardeners. Cacti have evolved for arid living so are used to very little water, hot days and chilly nights, making them perfectly adapted to modern home living! Needing very little in the way of care, cacti are the ideal houseplant for everyone. Happy in a sandy compost, with plenty of light and a little water now and again, your cactus will thrive as it is built to conserve moisture. It will tolerate being dry and will explode into growth when watered correctly (just don't overwater them). If you want to do less and get more out of your plants, then these cacti are ideal as they are slow-growing, and this specimen is the perfect living sculpture for home decoration. Ideal to get kids interested in gardening, this cactus is ready to place anywhere you want, from windowsills to desks and shelves. Supplied as a single plant, ready to go on a windowsill near you now! Please note that the decorative pot is not included. Remember that cacti are prickly beggars – always wear protective clothing when handling.Care GuideAlways use specialist cactus compost when potting. This is sandier and grittier than ordinary compost, which helps keep the plants dry. Keep plants frost-free. Although some will tolerate low temperature, in general they need to be kept above 8-10C, so they make ideal houseplants. While cacti survive on little water, they will not thrive. From April to September, water weekly, allowing the compost to soak up water and drain freely. Feed with a general-purpose feed at 1/4 strength once a fortnight. From October to March, water only when the compost has dried, and then only enough to stop plants shrivelling. Keep your plants in bright but not direct sunlight; an east or west-facing windowsill is ideal. This product is offered for sale for home delivery exclusively via our website only. All heights listed are approximate and fully established plant heights may vary. The amount of foliage, buds or bloom on the plant will depend on what part of the season the product is purchased. Please see description below for full product details.Crank up the heat in the garden with this fiery deciduous grass. Slowly growing into large clumps, Red Baron boasts 50cm long leaves that are green near the base turning more intensively red towards its tips. Equally at home in semi-shade as it is full sun, this grass is great for making a statement in pots or can be grown alongside perennials or other grasses in beds. If you really want to make an impact, plant it end-masse, in swathes or as an edging plant alongside a path. Dead easy to look after water it occasionally, especially in pots, and cut plants to ground level when they start to wither later in the year or before new growth appears in spring.Top Tips- These ornamental grasses are deciduous, cut back stems close to ground level from late February through to the end of March before new growth starts.Care Guide- Before planting, prepare the soil by digging over and removing any weeds. Incorporate some well-rotted manure to enrich the soil if necessary.- When planting a number of perennials, arrange them on the surface so you can see how they will look before planting.- Individually knock out each plant from its container. Look at the roots – if they are circling around the compost, it is best to tease them out. To do this, push your fingers into the rootball along the bottom edge and pull. Do this in a couple of places. This should encourage the roots to spread into the surrounding soil.- Next use a trowel or spade to create a hole just deep and wide enough to set in the rootball.- The aim is to bury just the roots, leaving the bases of the stems (when in growth in summer) or the shoots (in spring) above ground.- Firm back around the soil, using your hand for small clumps and your heel on larger areas.- Water in well to settle the soil and prevent desiccation.Planting Time:All yearAbout You GardenEstablished for over 50 years, our award winning trusted plant supplier are based in South Lincolnshire. Japanese Grey Bark Elm Zelkova Bonsai Ball Plant 22-25cm Tall
  • £19.99

Zelkova Serrata, also known as the Japanese Grey Bark Elm, is a wonderful starting point as you enter the magical world of bonsai, a revered art form in Japan and China for 2000 years. A delightful deciduous tree with a naturally upright growing habit, peeling grey bark and serrated glossy dark green leaves. Years of highly skilled training and pruning have contributed to this elegant miniature tree, already well established in a special ceramic bonsai pot. A native of Japan and China, Zelkova is happy in a cool, bright room away from heat sources. It will also thrive outdoors from early summer where it will soon acclimatise to cooler nights and warmer days. As a deciduous tree, it will lose its leaves in the autumn, when it can be brought back indoors for the winter. Trees that have been kept indoors year-round may retain some of their foliage over winter. Bonsai need regular watering as they can easily dry out. This is especially important if your Zelkova is growing outdoors, when the small amount of compost in the pot can dry out quickly on a warm, sunny day. Regular feeding between March and September is necessary to keep it growing healthily. A light trim will be required each Autumn to perfect the tree's shape. Supplied ready planted, 22-25cm tall including a 12cm ceramic bonsai pot with tray.General Bonsai Tree Care: Watering your Bonsai: Because it is restricted in a small pot, your bonsai will need checking morning and evening to see if it needs watering. Keep your bonsai on its tray; this will catch the water draining through the holes in the bottom of the pot and will create some humidity around your bonsai, especially useful if you have central heating on. Don't let your bonsai sit in water as this can damage its roots.Where to put your Bonsai: During winter place your bonsai in the brightest place possible, avoiding artificial heat such as radiators. If placing your bonsai on a windowsill, keep it out of direct sunlight as they prefer cooler rooms. During the summer, your bonsai will enjoy a spell outside, just remember to keep it in a bright, sheltered position.Feeding your Bonsai: We always recommend feeding your bonsai with a specialist fertiliser - ordinary plant foods can be too strong for the bonsai and may scorch the roots. Feed once a week to once a fortnight during the spring, summer and autumn.Reduce the feeding to approximately once a month in mid-winter when it is barely growing. Yellowing of the leaves if the bonsai is deficient in nutrients. How to Prune Your Bonsai: Once new shoots have grown to about 2-3cm, using a sharp pair of bonsai scissors carefully cut back to the first pair of new leaves. Your bonsai has individual branches and you should prune to maintain the gaps between them. Prune regularly to maintain the shape - start as soon as you get your tree. During the growing season any long shoots or crossing branches should be trimmed back. This product is offered for sale for home delivery exclusively via our website only.
