An absolute gem of a winter flowering plant, little seen but a really good winter garden plant, not grown widely enough. In late winter and early spring, before there's much colour about at all, even before daffodils, it produces intriguing yellow and cream flowers, lightly scented, smothered over bare stems, as flowers are produced before the leaves. It is a relative of the Daphne, sharing it's preference for cool, lightly shaded spots. Martin distinctly remembers being blown away by the first sight and smell of this plant, a large specimen on a remote Dutch Nursery, on a wet, windy and grey February afternoon, but finding much stock has been a challenge. Now we have some, it deserves a space in many gardens.
A bushy, deciduous shrub with very dark purple foliage which contrasts well with the abundance of yellow flowers in June, Diervilla rivularis 'Troja Black' makes an ideal specimen shrub for any garden. Also known as the Georgia Bush Honeysuckle because of the shape of the flowers, it's a superb way to bring colour into your garden, the double-lipped blooms compliment perfectly the purple-bronze leaves, which turn deep red in autumn. As the flowers age, they turn a delightful yellow-coral and are a magnet to pollinators, especially butterflies. A new introduction, Troja Black spreads by sending up suckers which eventually form a decent sized clump, perfect for a massed planting. Easy to grow and definitely a plant that can take a lot of neglect, the steeple bush is a plant that can be grown by virtually anyone! Especially suited to cottage gardens and informal plantings, it can be clipped back hard and will recover rapidly. Perfect for filling gaps in the garden, it will send up suckers that will soon form a dense thicket of leaves that becomes covered in its characteristic blooms through late spring and early summer. The Rainbow Bush (Portulacaria Afar f. Mediopicta) is a slow growing succulent shrub. It has distinctive red stems which are adorned with little light green leaves that are heavily variegated. With so much colour con-trast, and the intertwining stems as it matures, this is a feast for the eyes when grown. Speaking of growing, this stemmed succulent is particularly versatile and easy to grow. Plant it outdoors in warm climates and it can grow into a dense, 4.0' tall shrub. Keep it indoors in a small pot and it will stay a petite, bonsai plant. However, with all succulents in the UK climate they like to be kept warm during the winter months. So, bring indoors if you are placing outdoors or keep it indoors in a warm place all year round. Light and Water Keep in direct sunlight, bright light or bright indirect light. In Summer water thoroughly only when 100% of the soil has dried out. After watering allow soil to dry 100% - water sparingly (every two month). Spring gradually increase watering - depending on temp and light expo-sure.
A lovely contrast to the usual greens , this medium sized bush has stunning deep purple rounded leaves. It's a deciduous shrub so bare in winter, in spring the young leaves quickly deepen in colour with a waxy sheen before turning deep red in autumn. Feathery flowers appear in summer, singly they are insignificant yet together they give the plant a hazy look leading to it's common name - Smoke Bush. Fully hardy, it thrives in most soils but needs a sunny spot to do best. Cotinus is easy to maintain needing just an occasional light trim to encourage new growth which enhances the display of foliage. This close relative of the raspberry is really something special and is perfectly suited to UK gardens as it loves moist soils and will easily withstand the coldest winter weather. You'll get masses of fruit which ripen in July and August and have a rich raspberry taste which is enhance with a sherberty zing! They are delicious eaten fresh and make a great addition to summer puddings. This is an ideal plant to train against a wall or fence where it will quickly establish giving coils of attractive stems with pink hairs and bold lime green leaves.
