Widley admired for its blooms, it begins flowering in early July and goes on until the autumn producing some of the largest flowers in the poppy family - up to 15cm (6in) in width. With its divided, grey-green leaves this native of dry coastal Californian scrubland is hardy and will die down in winter, and although slow to get established, it's vigorous once it's happy.
