A cottage garden favourite, red roses are a must have and this The Prince's Trust Rose ('Harholding') is no exception. Cobra Lily Chasmanthe floribunda Saturnus
  • £1.99

Sometimes known as the Cobra Lily, it's not hard to imagine how it got this name, resembling the forked tongue of a Cobra. A fiery, exotic and fabulous looking summer-flowering bulb, not widely known or grown, yet very easy in pots. Not entirely hardy, it will take a degree or two of frost if well-drained, so we suggest growing in pots, with added sand or gravel for drainage. Plant 3 or 4 corms in a 25-30cm diameter pot, as they will spread over 5 years or so, giving bigger and better displays. The best displays are from full sun spots, so feed and water well in warmer months. This relative of Montbretia (Crocosomia) produces lovely, deep-orange flame-like flowers in tall and showy spikes in high summer, developing to seed-pods which add autumn interest. Bring the pot inside over winter to ensure survival for following years. Supplied as a pack of 5 bulbs ready to plant out.

Colchicum autumnale The Giant
  • £7.99

One of the most opulent and striking of the autumn-flowering bulbs, Colchicums are best known for their spectacular goblet-shaped, lilac-pink flowers in September and October. Colchicum flowers emerge first from their summer dormancy, earning the name 'Naked Ladies', followed by large, strappy leaves that are retained until mid-summer. Fully hardy and the perfect candidate for naturalising in grass, colchicum is one of those bulbs that surprise and delight every year when they emerge in a prelude to the main spring bulb event - giving us a taster of what the new year will bring. Each large bulb will produce multiple flowers and are an excellent choice for rockeries or for borders where drainage is good, and they can even be grown on a windowsill without soil in a hyacinth vase (or even a saucer). Easy to grow in good, fertile soil, the bright flowers of this autumn crocus are weather resistant too, giving a good display when many other plants are becoming dormant. Supplied as a pack of 3 bulbs, ready for immediate planting.

Colour in the Garden
  • £9.49

A sumptuously colourful garden has the extraordinary power to lift the spirits no matter the time of year. Yet many people struggle to create their own colour combinations that are suitable to site and soil, and which take their gardens through the seasons. This new book provides inspiration and practical advice for gardeners wishing to improve their plantings, both in appearance and in use. Val Bourne shows how varied and vibrant plantings can enhance the look of beds and borders, and how - with a little planning - they can be beautiful features for much longer than one season. Colour in the Garden is particularly useful for those with small gardens, where every inch of space must work hard for as long as possible. Written by a true plants woman and experienced gardener, with an in-depth knowledge of plants and how they behave, as well as a strong and creative sense of colour, this guide will revolutionise the way we think about colour in our gardens and ensure that no gardener will ever feel at a loss again.   Hardback
