If you only grow one lettuce variety, surely this is the one to choose. True to its name, 'All Year Round' can be sown at any time of the year for harvesting over a long season. This heritage variety has been a firm favourite with British vegetable growers since the middle of the 19th century. A classic 'butterhead', it produces medium-sized lettuces with loosely formed heads that have soft-textured green outer leaves and compact, crisp, creamy yellow hearts. Succulent and sweet, and a good source of minerals and vitamins A and C, its flavour and goodness easily outclass supermarket-bought lettuce. Easy to grow, 'All Year Round' is a reliable cropper that is slow to bolt, so will crop over a long season. Regular sowings made every 2-3 weeks will ensure a continuous supply. Also know as the Checkerberry or Partridge Berry, this low growing evergreen shrub is an excellent choice for containers on a terrace or balcony and makes a handsome ground-covering plant for shady spots. Bell shaped flowers in pinkish-white open from May to July, but 'Big Berry' really starts to put on a show in autumn, when it covers itself in large, aromatic, bright scarlet fleshy berries 10mm across. This display lasts through the winter, so you'll really appreciate the colour during the darker months. Gaultheria prefers partial shade over sun, and will do well in full shade too, so it'll perform fantastically brightening up those dull spots that all gardens have. The soil should be neutral or a little acid, so us ericaceous compost especially when growing in pots. Supplied as an established plant in a 13cm pot, ready to plant out. Also known as New Zealand Flax, Phormium 'Pink Panther' is a robust, fully hardy evergreen which forms a dense clump of sword-like leaves - a really great plant for adding a bit of a statement to your garden. Stunning in a border and stylish in a container, this recently introduced phormium plant has particularly striking, bright pink, red-edged leaves, and is a compact form - meaning that it won't overshadow everything in your garden plus you can grow it in a pot! Phormiums prefer a hot dry site (although will tolerate partial shade) and make a great candidate for a Mediterranean garden or a gravel garden where their upright leaves make a great foil for many other coloured plants. Easy to grow, phormium 'Pink Panther' is a compact form, and needs virtually no maintenance - it may even reward you with spikes of red flowers in late summer.
