Hollyhock 'Nigra' is a tall, vigorous perennial, with rounded, palm-shaped leaves and their instantly recognisable, towering spires of single, loose trumpet-shaped flowers which are a deep chocolate-maroon, almost black. 'Cantor' is a highly sought-after and simply beautiful Calla lily variety, producing stunning, near black flowers each summer. Newly formed blooms are black to begin with, then unfurl slowly to reveal deep, maroon-purple trumpets. A real showstopper! Grow singly in pots about 10-15cm diameter, or all 3 in a 20cm diameter pot. For best results, they should be kept very warm and well watered once planted for 2 weeks to kick-start them out of dormancy - on a heater or an airing cupboard is fine, then once the green shoots appear, they can be placed outside. The corms are shallow, and need to be planted saucer shape up, just with a shallow 1-2cm covering of compost only. Also known as New Zealand Flax, Phormium 'Black Adder' is a robust, fully hardy evergreen which forms a dense clump of sword-like leaves - a really great plant for adding a bit of a statement to your garden. Stunning in a border and stylish in a container, this recently introduced phormium plant has particularly attractive, deep purple, almost black, lustrous foliage, and is a compact form - meaning that it won't overshadow everything in your garden. Phormiums prefer a hot dry site (although will tolerate partial shade) and make a great candidate for a Mediterranean garden or a gravel garden where their upright leaves make a great foil for many other coloured plants. Easy to grow, phormium 'Black Adder' is a compact form, slightly more upright than the popular 'Platts Black' and needs virtually no maintenance - it may even reward you with spikes of red flowers in late summer. Rudbeckia fulgida 'Goldsturm' is a neat daisy which erupts into bloom from July to October adding warm, end of season colour to your borders.
