Euonymus fortunei 'Emerald 'n' Gold' does what its name suggests: its leathery, variegated leaves are, indeed, coloured vibrant shades of emerald and yellow. Although this foliage is evergreen, it gains an eye-catching, pink tint in the winter months, adding interest to what can otherwise become a rather bleak landscape. Perhaps this quality is what prompted the RHS to award the hardy shrub an AGM. Then again, perhaps it was the Spindle's spreading habit, tolerance of drought and ability to grow in shady areas that earned it this honour. Choisya ternata 'Sundance' will make you dance with joy when it produces pure white, scented blooms in the late spring, late summer and early autumn. You won't stop dancing even when the sun disappears behind wintry clouds, for Mexican Orange Blossom's unusual yellow leaves are evergreen, so add a splash of colour to the garden all year round. They look especially stunning against a backdrop of other plants' darker foliage in flowerbeds and borders. As if its aesthetic appeal wasn't enough, this hardy shrub, also known as Choisya ternata 'Lich', is exceptionally tolerant. Erica carnea 'Myretoun Ruby' is a hardy evergreen plant that makes superb ground cover thanks to its good spreading habit. Pure white flowers in late winter contrast with bright evergreen foliage, making Erica x darleyensis f. albiflora 'White Perfection' a great choice for the front of the border or rockery.
