Exochorda x macrantha 'Niagara' is happy in sun or dappled shade in any well-drained soil, Exochorda is relatively compact, only reaching around 150cm x 150cm, so is ideal for small gardens, and can easily be pruned to further reduce its size. Easy to grow and maintain, once established plants are drought tolerant, making them ideal for modern gardens and for gardeners concerned with climate change. The 'Dissectum' part of the name refers to the very feathery leaves, which emerge in early spring the most gorgeous burgundy red, and remain in deep colour all summer, turning redder still in autumn. A slow growing, spreading tree with the perfect balanced habit, it is great as a border specimen, or in a large pot, where it can remain for 10 years quite happily - and you can take it with you if you move house!. Very few shrubs are able to boast such rich, almost black foliage, but this recently introduced Elder does just that. The striking, fine cut leaves are an intense shade of dark purple, changing to a vibrant red in autumn. In summer, large clusters of small fragrant pink flowers are borne, which are later replaced by glossy black berries, especially attractive to birds, but can be left to ripen to make a wonderful wine. Sambucus nigra f. porphyrophylla ?Black Lace? is an easy to grow, hardy, deciduous shrub and grows best in full sun.
