Heucheras, also known as Coral Bells, are amazing perennial plants, famed for their spectacular foliage in a huge range of colours with wonderful leaf shapes forming low growing evergreen or semi-evergreen mounds. 'Dale's Strain' is perfect if you're looking to add year-round colour to your garden. It has serrated, wavy foliage in a beautiful and silvery mid green colour that are often flushed with purple details. In late spring and early summer, 'Dale's Strain' produces panicles for small bell-shaped flowers in a gorgeous blush pink that contrasts effortlessly against the gorgeous green foliage. They are also attractive to wildlife such as bees and hummingbirds. It will thrive in pots and looks great planted towards the front of mixed borders, especially when several different varieties are planted together, creating a carpet of colourful, evergreen groundcover. These adaptable plants are happy in sun or partial shade and aren't too fussy about soil conditions if it isn't heavy and waterlogged as that will cause the crown to rot. One of the most opulent and striking of the autumn-flowering bulbs, Colchicums are best known for their spectacular goblet-shaped, lilac-pink flowers in September and October. One of the easiest vegetables to grow, this ultra-hardy, compact kale variety will provide you with highly nutritious, tasty leaves from September through to March. A British culinary favourite since the mid-19th century, curly kale has had a resurgence in popularity in recent years. This dwarf variety has attractive, dark green, densely frilled leaves that have an extremely sweet taste with no bitterness. It's highly nutritious too, being rich in vitamins and antioxidants. A versatile ingredient in the kitchen, it is superb when steamed or stir-fried to retain nutrients and texture and the young leaves make a tasty raw addition to salads. Resilient, vigorous and sturdy, this dwarf kale's habit will tolerate exposed positions and most soil types; it does exceptionally well in poor soils where other vegetables might struggle, although is equally happy in well-drained, fertile soils. This is a vegetable that positively thrives over winter in Britain, so is a good cut-and-come-again option for continuous harvesting over a long season. Leaves are especially sweet and tasty when picked young from the plant. If left to flower, the yellow blooms will attract wildlife to your garden, being a great source of nectar and pollen. Calendula 'Art Shades', otherwise known as English or pot marigold, is an enduring cottage garden favourite that looks equally at home in traditional or contemporary planting schemes, where the richly coloured flowers will add cheerful character to your beds, borders or pots. They make a great cut flower for your vase, too, and the dried flowers are also excellent added to pot pourri. This easy-to-grow hardy annual produces masses of frilly petalled, fully double blooms in shades of creamy peach, orange, gold and yellow. They are hugely attractive to many beneficial insects, so make a great companion plant for your kitchen garden. In fact, the petals are edible, with a slightly peppery taste, and make a colourful garnish or addition to salads.
