If you only grow one lettuce variety, surely this is the one to choose. True to its name, 'All Year Round' can be sown at any time of the year for harvesting over a long season. This heritage variety has been a firm favourite with British vegetable growers since the middle of the 19th century. A classic 'butterhead', it produces medium-sized lettuces with loosely formed heads that have soft-textured green outer leaves and compact, crisp, creamy yellow hearts. Succulent and sweet, and a good source of minerals and vitamins A and C, its flavour and goodness easily outclass supermarket-bought lettuce. Easy to grow, 'All Year Round' is a reliable cropper that is slow to bolt, so will crop over a long season. Regular sowings made every 2-3 weeks will ensure a continuous supply. Lettuces are typically ready to pick about 10 weeks after sowing. Supplied as a packet of 800 (approx.) seeds ready to sow indoors or outdoors in their cropping position.
A classic courgette, 'All Green Bush' is a reliable, quick-growing and high-yielding variety that will crop all summer long with regular harvesting. One plant will typically produce 6-10 fruits. Its compact habit makes it ideal for growing in pots or containers, or the seeds can be planted directly in the ground where they are to crop. The dark skins are tender so are great when cooked whole. For the best flavour, harvest as baby courgettes at about 10-15cm (4-6in) long. If not eaten immediately, they will keep well for a few days stored in the fridge. Alternatively, allow one or two fruits to remain longer on the plant to form marrows, which are just lovely when crammed with vegetable or meat stuffings and baked in the oven. Courgette flowers can also be eaten; use them as soon after picking as possible for best results. Try them stuffed with herbs and soft cheese, then dipped in batter and quickly fried, or wilt them in hot olive oil to add to risottos and other savoury dishes. Quick to mature and easy to care for, this is a great little vegetable to get children interested in gardening - as well as for anyone who just can't wait to eat the fruits of their labours in the garden! Supplied as a packet of 20 (approx.) seeds ready to sow indoors in pots or outdoors direct into growing position. Sow indoors March to May for planting out in May to June; or sow outdoors April to May directly into growing position in full sun, 60cm (24in) apart, in fertile, well-drained soil.
A stunning sight, 'Red Giant' is quite unlike any other allium. With its relatives renowned for their tall, stiff stems that carry flowers high above the low growing foliage, this incredible variety does the exact opposite! In May and June, the flowerhead emerges and erupts into a globe, 12 cm (5 in) in diameter, made up of dozens or small, reddish purple flowers sitting just above the broad, arching green foliage. An ideal and unusual plant for growing at the front of borders, it also works extremely well when planted in groups in containers, having a very architectural look when in flower. Even though the stems are short, the flowers still look great indoors and in bouquets, whether fresh or dried, and they add winter interest, and an insect habitat, if left on the plant over the winter. Alliums aren't fussy about soil type but do prefer a sunny location. They will naturalise easily, multiplying over the years. Clumps can be dug up and split every few years, which will stop them becoming congested. Supplied as 5 bulbs, size 12/14, ready to plant in autumn, growing to a height and spread of 25 cm (10 in).
