Incredibly easy to grow, Japanese quince will tolerate most soil types and aspects, including shade, which makes them invaluable for brightening dull corners of the garden and being a wide spreading shrub with thorny branches, it makes a perfect security hedge to deter unwanted visitors. Additionally, they have also shown good resistance to honey fungus - ideal if your garden is susceptible. Not just a pretty face, quinces develop apple-like fruit with a distinctive, sweetly fragrant aroma when ripe and can be cooked and made into jelly, making them the perfect decorative addition to any grow your own project. Supplied as an established plant in a 2L pot, ready for immediate planting.Top Tips- Flowering quince plants are low maintenance, but they do benefit from regular pruning in late spring/early summer to keep them flowering well.Care GuidePlanting Advice for your Flowering Quince:- Plant in any moist, well drained garden soil, in full sun or semi-shade.- Water your potted plant well.- Dig a hole a little deeper and 3 x wider than the nursery pot.- Add a soil conditioner such as well-rotted manure to the earth removed from the hole if necessary.- Remove the plant from its pot and tease out a few of the roots.- Sprinkle mycorrhizal fungi (Rootgrow) into the base of the hole and onto the roots.- Place your plant in the hole at the same level at the pot.- Refill the hole with the earth removed (backfilling).- Firm in the soil with your heel, avoiding the root ball.- Water well and mulch around the base of the plant with a collar, compost, gravel, bark etc.Aftercare Advice for Chaenomeles Quince:- Drought tolerant once established, keep plants well-watered in their first year.Pruning Advice for Chaenomeles:- After flowering, prune side-shoots to five or six leaves and remove crossing stems.
