This deciduous shrub is a relative of the pear and mountain ash and is very hardy and easy to grow. Perfect for planting in a shrub border, Aronia is also ideal when situated in a woodland garden. Dainty white flowers of Aronia 'Brilliant' are produced in abundance in spring and these are followed by clusters of edible red fruits and later by fiery autumn colours which all make for a fabulous specimen tree with year-round interest. Known as chokeberries because of their tart flavour, the edible berries can be eaten fresh on their own or used as an ingredient in desserts, compotes, pies, juices and tea. With a higher antioxidant levels than other berries, the bright fruits are low in sugar and also contain beneficial vitamins and minerals said to enhance overall health and wellbeing and with one of the highest levels of anthocyanins (the pigment in the berry that gives them their colour), chokeberries are becoming increasingly labelled as a superfood. As you would expect, the edible berries are a favourite with birds and the flowers are visited by early pollinators making Aronia very popular with wildlife too. Supplied as an established plant in a 3L pot ready for immediate planting.

Enkianthus campanulatus is a large deciduous shrub with small leaves that will thrill you in spring with its clusters of red-tipped blooms and again in autumn with a spectacular display of bright red, orange and yellow. Suitable for acid to neutral soils and a great companion to rhododendrons and azaleas, 'Red Bells' is a particularly choice variety with clusters of cream, bell-shaped flowers tipped with red from late spring to mid-summer. A sumptuous display, the blooms hang like tiny, red-blushed grapes and contrast beautifully with the glossy leaves. Easy to grow, Enkianthus prefers partial shade, but will grow in full sun as long as you remember to keep it well watered. Perfect in large pots, Enkianthus is happiest in ericaceous compost. A super little scented winter treasure 'Wintersweet', as it is commonly called, produces stunning buttery yellow flowers in clusters, each with a lovely burgundy centre and veining detail. Producing a lovely sweet scent on bare stems, they are a joy to behold on cold winter days. An easy and fairly quick grower, it thrives in mixed shrubberies and borders, or larger pots, in sun or light shade, where you can bring them close to the house for maximum fragrance enjoyment. They also make a lovely long-lasting cut stem for the vase also. Supplied as an established plant in a 17cm pot to plant out all year - approx 20cm tall.
A new introduction and a worthy plant for your borders and pots this year, these bedding plants have been bred to perform really well in your garden and are ideal when grown in containers. With two different flower colours on the same plant, each one is smothered in both pastel pink and also yellow flowers, this Marguerite Daisy will flower its little heart out all summer and into autumn, filling your garden with dazzling, colour-changing blooms. Really easy to grow and ideal for beginner gardeners, the compact plants are well branched, meaning that you'll get plenty of flowers. Good for wildlife too as each daisy is held above the finely divided, feathery leaves, making them stand out even more, creating a mecca for butterflies and other pollinators. Supplied as 6 x plug plants, ready to grow on before planting out.
This unusual plant will help deter cats and other unwanted pests from entering and fouling your garden. Coleus Canina works by emitting an odour that cats in particular find incredibly offensive and therefore disappear back out of your gate or over the fence! It will be at its most effective when planted in a sunny spot, because the odour gets stronger the hotter the leaves become - fortunately the odour is barely obvious to humans! Coleus Canina is incredibly easy to grow and will thrive on a high degree of neglect because it is a naturally drought tolerant plant. It even has the added bonus of producing attractive blue flowers during the summer months and in to early autumn. Supplied as 12 plug plants, ready to grow on before planting out.
A new introduction for 2019, Daphne x transatlantica 'Summer Ice' is set to become a favourite with gardeners. Not yet widely available, we've managed to secure some stock of this exquisite variegated gem for the new gardening season. 'Summer Ice' is notable for its blue-green leaves edged with clear ivory giving it a frosted look - something rather special in Daphnes. These form a delicate crown, topped with soft pink-flushed, fragrant blooms - the plant's pièce de résistance! Be prepared to be intoxicated by the provocative perfume which will pervade your garden as soon as the flowers open in spring - and plants may repeat bloom right up to the autumn! Daphnes grow into a mound of neat leaves, and 'Summer Ice' is no exception - keeping its leaves in mild winters, it's classed as semi-evergreen, providing a good backdrop of colour in your garden. Really easy to grow in rich, moist soil in sun or light shade, plants look fabulous too in pots and containers, and have the advantage that you can move them around your garden so that you can appreciate their fragrance wherever you are - we think that a pair either side of your front door make a unique and eye-catching (and nose-catching!) feature. Supplied as an established plant in a 9cm pot, ready for planting out and reaching an ultimate height and spread of 1m x 1m (3ft x 3ft).
If you want a garden plant that no-one else will have (or even recognise) then the Carolina Allspice, (Sinocalycanthus raulstonii 'Hartlage Wine') has got to be your go-to plant. An ideal choice for many gardens from woodland to moderately sunny, it is a robust, deciduous shrub with beautiful, lightly scented, maroon flowers up to 7.5cm (3-4in) across. A relatively new introduction for gardeners and a first for us here at YouGarden, 'Hartlage Wine' was first revealed at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show in 2010, where it delighted all who encountered it. The flowers themselves are a delight to see and form along the branches. They are a rich shade of burgundy red, with just a hint of cream towards their centre - simply gorgeous against the backdrop of the lustrous green foliage, which in turn transforms to buttery shades in autumn. This unusual and delightful shrub is the first successful cross between Calycanthus floridus and Sinocalycanthus chinensis, its rare Chinese counterpart, making it something really special for your garden, and a plant that will amaze all who see it! Fully hardy, plants can withstand temperatures down to -15°C (5°F) and grow best in part shade, although you can also grow this beauty in full sun if it is kept well-watered until established.
An absolute gem of a winter flowering plant, little seen but a really good winter garden plant, not grown widely enough. In late winter and early spring, before there's much colour about at all, even before daffodils, it produces intriguing yellow and cream flowers, lightly scented, smothered over bare stems, as flowers are produced before the leaves. It is a relative of the Daphne, sharing it's preference for cool, lightly shaded spots. Martin distinctly remembers being blown away by the first sight and smell of this plant, a large specimen on a remote Dutch Nursery, on a wet, windy and grey February afternoon, but finding much stock has been a challenge. Now we have some, it deserves a space in many gardens.
Blessed with strongly scented flowers from late spring into early summer, French lilacs are desirable deciduous shrubs that really make their presence felt. Appearing in great profusion at the end of branches clothed with heart shaped green leaves, the tiny, packed clusters of purple buds open to reveal a mass of brightly coloured tubular flowers that smell great and act as a magnet to wildlife. A real sun lover, lilacs can be grown in just about any soil or can be raised in large containers. For a sensational floral display, year after year, deadhead when two new shoots appear beneath faded blooms and remove any wayward branches to keep a compact shape. Supplied as 3 established plants in 9cm pots, 1 each of 3 colours; pink, white and lavender-blue.
