'Autumn Bliss' has proven itself as a popular and successful gardener's variety for a number of years, with good disease resistance and long cropping period. 'Autumn Bliss is a Primocane variety, so it produces fruits on its new season stems, from August to first frosts of late October. This saves a whole year of growing time in the garden compared to old-fashioned varieties, and means they are more compact and suitable for pot and patio growing, reaching 4ft (1.2M), on sturdy stems, requiring little support Because they fruit on same year's growth, they are exceptionally easy to maintain - simply cut all shoots back to ground level when dormant in February.
New to us for 2019, this completely thornless and vigorous golden autumn raspberry has been bred in the UK by the world-famous East Malling Research facility. Primocane raspberries are the big gardeners' breakthrough - they produce fruit on NEW stems, so you get fruit in the same year as you plant them, rather than wait a year for old-fashioned types. In addition, you can increase cropping by tip pruning existing canes which then develop side shoots for a truly phenomenal harvest of raspberries. Easy to grow, upright and robust, the canes are completely thornless and can be grown in a large container using bamboo for support so you don't even need a garden, and they're fully hardy and easy to keep as well, just cut back old, fruited canes to the ground in spring. The very large, firm, conical fruit have a beautiful, apricot colour and a fabulous, gourmet flavour which develops as the berries ripen, so wait until the fruits turn from yellow to apricot before picking. Supplied as an established plant in a 12cm pot ready for immediate planting, plants reach approx. 2m tall and 60cm wide and you can expect your first fruits from the middle of August through September.
One of the most rewarding and economical vegetables you can grow, Green Calabrese will crop from late summer right through autumn, producing densely packed clusters of deep bluish-green buds of up to 15cm (6in) diameter atop thick, tender stems and rich green leaves that are just as good to eat. Harvesting the broccoli heads will encourage further florets to grow lower down the stem - a great cut-and-come-again vegetable! With a milder, more subtle flavour than sprouting broccoli, 'Green Calabrese' makes a colourful and tasty ingredient whether prepared raw for salads or dips, or steamed, boiled or stir-fried. It makes great soup, too - an ideal way of using up any leftover stems and leaves. Excess crops will freeze well, so you can enjoy this versatile veg through the winter, long after its generous season has finished. Commonly regarded as a 'superfood', all parts of the plant are highly nutritious - a great source of fibre and protein, as well as vitamins and minerals. The leaves hold the highest levels of antioxidants and vitamins, and the stalks contain the most fibre - far too good to waste! Easy to grow, broccoli will thrive in an open, sunny position in fertile, well draining, moisture-retentive soil. Ideally, dig in some well-rotted manure into the growing site in the autumn before sowing. There is no need to dig over the soil too much immediately before planting as undisturbed soil offers a firm roothold for brassicas and will help them establish quickly and well. Successive sowing will extend the cropping season. Fast-growing, they will reach a mature height of up to 60cm (24in).
