'Barnsley Baby' is a fabulous lavatera and a dwarf variety of a classic cottage garden favourite, bred to be considerably smaller than its full-sized relatives. It has a naturally compact form, but its flowers are just as large and, incredibly, are even more abundant than any other variety. The candyfloss pink strings of flowers open in succession from the bottom to the top of the stems between July and October, so this beautiful shrub is constantly covered in buds and freshly opened flowers, giving the look of an extravagant flower arrangement. Lavateras, also known as Mallows, are traditionally large, vigorous plants that produce long stems covered in lovely, large open flowers in white or shades of pink. They are incredibly attractive to bees and a host of other pollinating insects, so if you want to do your bit to save our wildlife, planting any variety of Lavatera in your garden will certainly help. 'Barnsley Baby' only reaches a third of the size of most other varieties, making it perfect for growing in pots. Lavender is a classic, hardy English perennial, and this much-loved cottage garden favourite will transform your garden with colour, incredible fragrance and plenty of flower power! A proven winner in UK gardens, Lavender 'Grosso' is perfect in beds, borders and containers and is also ideal for edging a path or for planting as a fragrant hedge or garden border where its magnificent scent will delight anyone who walks past! Cut the stems back by a few inches, but not so far that the stems are bare of live foliage, and plants will then have time to produce new shoots before winter dormancy. The clippings can then be uses to make fragrant indoor displays and potpourri! This drought-tolerant plant will thrive in a sunny border, container, herb or gravel gardens. If you garden on heavy clay, it is worth adding some grit to improve drainage and to open the soil up. Space plants 90cm (3ft) apart, or if growing a hedge, 30cm (1ft) apart or, 45cm (18in) for larger cultivars. Lavender can be grown in large pots, 30-40cm (1ft-16in) diameter, using a multipurpose or loam-based compost such as JI No 3, with some extra coarse grit, (up to 30%), to improve drainage, along with some controlled release fertiliser granules. A fascinating and stunning looking plant, this Pineapple Guava is a native of South America yet is perfectly happy here in the UK. Like a bird of paradise, its flamboyant sorbet-pink and ice-white blooms will create an exotic display from late spring to early summer, bearing sweet nectar that is loved by butterflies and bees. In autumn this stunning plant then yields delicious, tropical-tasting green egg-shaped fruits with succulent flesh - similar to a kiwi but smoother in appearance.
