'Barnsley Baby' is a fabulous lavatera and a dwarf variety of a classic cottage garden favourite, bred to be considerably smaller than its full-sized relatives. It has a naturally compact form, but its flowers are just as large and, incredibly, are even more abundant than any other variety. The candyfloss pink strings of flowers open in succession from the bottom to the top of the stems between July and October, so this beautiful shrub is constantly covered in buds and freshly opened flowers, giving the look of an extravagant flower arrangement. Lavateras, also known as Mallows, are traditionally large, vigorous plants that produce long stems covered in lovely, large open flowers in white or shades of pink. They are incredibly attractive to bees and a host of other pollinating insects, so if you want to do your bit to save our wildlife, planting any variety of Lavatera in your garden will certainly help. 'Barnsley Baby' only reaches a third of the size of most other varieties, making it perfect for growing in pots. It'll be completely happy in a 30 cm (1 ft) diameter planter in a sunny location where it will flower its little heart out in late summer, just as many other flowering plants are beginning to slow down. Acer palmatum ' Extravaganza ' is a Japanese maple with beautiful purple-red leaves that have distinctive broad white and pink stripes. They give the plant a striking appearance, taking on a triple-coloured cloak of foliage that will light up dull areas of the garden. Then, in autumn, the leaves turn to red before falling in an inferno of vibrant colour. With beautiful, filigree leaves and a gently spreading habit, this Japanese Maple is a slow growing shrub that reaches just 150-170cm (60-67in), it's the perfect specimen for containers on the decking, patio or balcony and for those of us with smaller gardens and its easy to grow too, so there's no excuse for anyone not to give it a go! Best planted in semi-shade for the best leaf colour, Extravaganza will tolerate sun as long as it's not direct, bringing an air of peace and tranquillity to wherever it is planted. Fully winter hardy, it's the ultimate in low maintenance plants, needing very little in the way of pruning except to remove any damaged or dying branches. If you garden on heavy clay, it is worth adding some grit to improve drainage and to open the soil up. Space plants 90cm (3ft) apart, or if growing a hedge, 30cm (1ft) apart or, 45cm (18in) for larger cultivars. Lavender can be grown in large pots, 30-40cm (1ft-16in) diameter, using a multipurpose or loam-based compost such as JI No 3, with some extra coarse grit, (up to 30%), to improve drainage, along with some controlled release fertiliser granules.
