Lavatera Mallow Barnsley Baby
  • £14.99

'Barnsley Baby' is a fabulous lavatera and a dwarf variety of a classic cottage garden favourite, bred to be considerably smaller than its full-sized relatives. It has a naturally compact form, but its flowers are just as large and, incredibly, are even more abundant than any other variety. The candyfloss pink strings of flowers open in succession from the bottom to the top of the stems between July and October, so this beautiful shrub is constantly covered in buds and freshly opened flowers, giving the look of an extravagant flower arrangement. Lavateras, also known as Mallows, are traditionally large, vigorous plants that produce long stems covered in lovely, large open flowers in white or shades of pink. They are incredibly attractive to bees and a host of other pollinating insects, so if you want to do your bit to save our wildlife, planting any variety of Lavatera in your garden will certainly help. 'Barnsley Baby' only reaches a third of the size of most other varieties, making it perfect for growing in pots. It'll be completely happy in a 30 cm (1 ft) diameter planter in a sunny location where it will flower its little heart out in late summer, just as many other flowering plants are beginning to slow down. Incredibly easy to grow and look after, all that's required is plenty of water and a monthly feed, followed by cutting back hard each spring to encourage lush, bushy new growth which will look gorgeous even before the show stopping flower stems begin to appear, teasing you as the buds swell and being to burst open. Supplied as an established shrub in a 17cm pot, ready to plant out.

Slowly growing into large clumps, Red Baron boasts 50cm long leaves that are green near the base turning more intensively red towards its tips. Equally at home in semi-shade as it is full sun, this grass is great for making a statement in pots or can be grown alongside perennials or other grasses in beds. If you really want to make an impact, plant it end-masse, in swathes or as an edging plant alongside a path. Dead easy to look after water it occasionally, especially in pots, and cut plants to ground level when they start to wither later in the year or before new growth appears in spring.Top Tips- These ornamental grasses are deciduous, cut back stems close to ground level from late February through to the end of March before new growth starts.Care Guide- Before planting, prepare the soil by digging over and removing any weeds. Incorporate some well-rotted manure to enrich the soil if necessary.- When planting a number of perennials, arrange them on the surface so you can see how they will look before planting.- Individually knock out each plant from its container. Look at the roots – if they are circling around the compost, it is best to tease them out. To do this, push your fingers into the rootball along the bottom edge and pull. Do this in a couple of places. This should encourage the roots to spread into the surrounding soil.- Next use a trowel or spade to create a hole just deep and wide enough to set in the rootball.- The aim is to bury just the roots, leaving the bases of the stems (when in growth in summer) or the shoots (in spring) above ground.- Firm back around the soil, using your hand for small clumps and your heel on larger areas.- Water in well to settle the soil and prevent desiccation.Planting Time:All yearAbout You GardenEstablished for over 50 years, our award winning trusted plant supplier are based in South Lincolnshire. Peony Itoh Bartzella
  • £14.99

What a cracker this lovely peony is, and a one off too. It's an Intersectional Peony, a hybrid between traditional perennial varieties and the tougher tree peony, combining beauty, colour and robustness in one, also known as an Itoh Peony after Dr. Toichi Itoh. Created in 1986, Paeonia Itoh 'Bartzella' produces beautiful lemon-yellow flowers with frilly, ruffled centres and unique magenta streaks at the petal base. This created quite a stir at the time, with an individual root selling for over $1000.00! Fortuantely now much more affordable, Bartzella quickly forms a neat mound of deep-green foliage that acts as the perfect backdrop for its giant flowers, this superb peony with flower its socks off in April and May, and even into June. What's more, the blooms carry a wonderful lemon-citrus scent which is a joy on those sunny spring days! Long lived and easy to grow, this fully hardy peony is especially vigorous with sturdy flower stems that don't require staking - making them exquisite cut flowers. Being a perennial, each autumn Bartzella retreats underground, only to emerge bigger and more floriferous next year. Perfect in mixed borders in sun or light shade, it's not a plant that enjoys the confines of a pot for too long - if you must grow them in a container, use a large one and after a few years unpot the plant and relocate to a bed or border. Plants will produce dozens of flowers when happy and because they grow wide rather than high, they are an excellent choice for a border hedge, with a wave of flowers which add to the overall planting scheme. Consider growing them in several groupings of three or more at intervals along the length of a flower border for an early wave of romantic colour tones. Supplied as a bare root plant ready for potting up and growing on or planting straight out when the soil has warmed.
