There's nothing finer than a large Agapanthus in full flower at the height of summer, creating an eruption of brilliant blue. It's the perfect plant for an ornate container and with a little care will last a lifetime. Even before the 1m flower stems appear the bright green strap life leaves are a lovely sight and heighten the expectation of the blooms to come from mid summer. Agapanthus do best when their roots are restricted so don't be tempted to pot into too large a container - just a little wider than the nursery pot they arrive in will be fine. Place in a sunny spot and enjoy this African native in your garden over summer!
This small, low-growing shrub makes an excellent container plant, as its star-like bright blue flowers keep on coming for weeks and weeks from late spring right through the summer months. Lithodora diffusa 'Heavenly Blue' is also a fine performer in the rockery with evergreen leaves providing ground cover all year. Scabious 'Butterfly Blue' is great in wildlife gardens because, as its name suggests, it attracts scores of butterflies and bees between July and October. These pollinators flock to the hardy perennial's lavender-blue blooms, which protrude on dainty stems above grey-green, lance shaped foliage. Scabiosa atropurpurea, which is sometimes called Pinchushion Flower or Sweet Scabious, grows best in sunny, cottage garden borders, but also makes an interesting cut flower. Height: 40cm (1'4). This completely natural, recycled, lime free Welsh slate changes colour from pale grey-blue to glossy blue and purple when it gets wet which creates a contemporary look wherever it's used in your garden.
