This superb 'spring' onion - a winner of the RHS Award of Garden Merit - is a tried-and-tested heritage variety that has been a firm favourite with beginner and experienced gardeners alike for more than 300 years. With tall, pure white-skinned stems progressing to bright green tops, its mild flavour nevertheless has a distinctive, crisp and piquant 'bite' when harvested young. Left to mature for a while longer, it will develop a stronger, more pungent flavour - equally delicious whether eaten raw in salads, slaws or potato salads, or added to stir-fries or other savoury dishes during the final stages of cooking. The definitive traditional 'spring' onion, it is fast-growing, compact and sturdy - ideal for patio containers or gardens with limited space. It is an ideal choice for growing in between other crops such as slow-growing brassicas to make maximum use of space, as well as a great plant for encouraging children to garden as they will quickly see the results of their efforts. Being a hardy annual, you can be sure of achieving successful early crops. Sow in succession every 2-3 weeks to ensure a continuous harvest from May to October. These onions will thrive in full sun; plant them 15cm (6in) apart in well-dug, fertile soil after the danger of frosts has passed. Here's the perfect place to start if you want to cultivate your own Bonsai and enjoy this ancient and fascinating horticultural art form. In it's natural state the Chinese Elm - Ulmus parvifolia often reaches 25m tall yet this specimen - already 7 years old - has been trained by skilful cultivation into perfect miniiature form. Already fully established in its own decorative ceramic planter this beautiful little tree will provide an instant focal point to any well lit room. Chinese Elms, with foliage closely resembling our more familiar native species, are particularly well suited to bonsai culture, readily branching and forming impressive gnarled trunks as they age. They're easy to care for needing only a light trim each autumn to encourage branching. Water well as the compost becomes dry but avoid the tree standing in wet. Feed occasionally with bonsai feed (see below) and your tree should thrive and last a lifetime or more! Your tree will enjoy a summer holiday on a table outdoors, In winter the leaves of this deciduous tree may drop but don't worry - they'll reappear in spring. It's fascinating that a plant found everywhere in the UK, usually as a formal hedge, actually makes a fantastic bonsai, and that's exactly what Ligustrum, or Privet is! Grown in a shallow plastic pot, this bonsai has been lovingly grown into an 'S' shape to show off its trunk and branches. Covered in glossy oval leaves, summer will see it produce tiny white scented flowers which are followed by small black fruits (which shouldn't be eaten). A great choice for beginners wanting to learn about the enchanting art of bonsai, or for those who want to add to their collection, Privet is a strong plant that takes well to bonsai styling techniques and produces a good thick trunk. Very fast growing, low maintenance, easy to prune and not too fussy about where it should be positioned, it's no surprise that this is an all-time favourite! As it's so vigorous, this is a hungry tree needing plenty of food and water. It's important not to let the shoots grown too long, as the tree will lose its 'miniature' appearance, so when shoots are 4cm long trim them back to the first pair of new leaves. Ligustrum, like all bonsai, has a symbolic meaning, and in this case it is peace and friendship, making it a beautifully thoughtful gift to somebody special. Quite a hardy bonsai, it can be kept outdoors for much of the year if you wish, and especially summer.
