This beautiful shrub is at its very best in late summer when it is festooned with dangling fruits the colour of strawberries and the size and shape of large cherries. At the same time, or sometimes a little earlier, dainty clusters of small white blooms hang from the branches. With evergreen foliage and cinnamon brown shredding bark, the Strawberry Tree has year-round interest. The fruits can be eaten raw, or made into jams and preserves. Arbutus unedo makes a lovely specimen shrub for a sheltered position. When mature it is completely hardy but young plants may appreciate some winter protection. Height and spread: 8m (25').
Evergreen trees that suit the British climate are few and far between and this is a perfect example of one that will give all-round interest. With shiny, deep-green, leathery leaves, pretty cream autumn flowers and colourful fruit, the Strawberry tree deserves to be far more widely grown. This is an easy tree to grow anywhere and suits coastal regions too. It grows steadily, forming a nicely proportioned medium-sized bush, which is covered with lustrous foliage throughout the year. In autumn you'll enjoy panicles of creamy bell-shaped blooms, which are not unlike Lily of the valley in appearance and are are particularly welcome as winter approaches. The orange-red, globe-shaped fruits ripen in autumn from the previous year's flowers, giving the whole tree a very decorative look at this time of year. Fruits are edible but sharp-tasting when raw so best left on the tree for their ornamental value - although they can be used in preserves.
A large evergreen shrub with rough textured reddish bark and dark green leaves producing stunning pink bell shaped flowers in the autumn. These blooms coincide with the ripening of the red strawberry-like fruits produced the previous year. The fruit is fairly bland but can be added with other fruit to make pies or jam. As a holder of the RHS Award of Garden Merit and a distant relation of the rhododendron this plant is sure to add all year round interest to your garden. Can be planted in the garden or in a patio container. Supplied in a 9cm pot.

If in doubt, err towards spring but remember to keep pots well-watered so that the soil does not dry out.Care GuidePlanting Advice for your Aronia arbutifolia 'Brilliant':- Grow in full sun to partial shade in fertile, moist well-drained soil. Protect from frost and winds.- Dig a planting hole 3 x wider than the roots of the shrub you're planting and mix some well-rotted compost or manure with the soil from the hole and use this to re-fill once the shrub is in place.- We've found that a square hole is better than a round one as the new roots, once they reach the edges tend to grow in a circle round the circumference of the hole whereas when they reach the corners of a square hole, they find it easier to grow through.- Before planting soak container-grown shrubs thoroughly and allow to drain.- Remove the plant from its pot and tease out a few of the roots and add Mycorrhizal fungi to the roots when planting to help plants establish quicker.- Place your shrub in the hole at the same level at the pot and refill the hole with the earth removed (backfilling).- Firm in the soil with your heel, avoiding the root ball and water well.- Mulch around the base of the plant with a collar, compost, gravel, bark etc.- If you're planting into pots, place some old rocks, stones or gravel in the bottom of the pot for drainage and ballast.- Use the best compost you can buy and some sand or grit for drainage.Aftercare advice for Aronia 'Brilliant':- Keep plants well-watered while they establish, especially if planted up in a pot.- Fully hardy, you'll need to protect from cold winds as it is these that tend to cause the most damage to young plants.Pruning Advice for Aronia:- Aronia require no special pruning; only occasional maintenance is needed to remove any growth that has been damaged over winter.Planting Time:February - NovemberFlowering Time:April - MayFruiting Time:August - SeptemberAbout You GardenEstablished for over 50 years, our award winning trusted plant supplier are based in South Lincolnshire.
