While you may have a perception of dahlias as being old-fashioned, and something that your grandad grew when you were younger, they have actually been enjoying a renaissance over the last few years, mainly because they provide such stunning colour and value for money in the late summer and autumn. So easy to grow, Dahlias are supplied as tubers, packed full of energy to burst into growth in spring. Plant in pots or in the garden and they will get away quickly from May, producing a mass of bright colours which will fill your garden as summer turns to autumn. Our collection of cactus dahlias will give you large, double blooms with narrow, spiky petals and each pack provides 5 mixed colour tubers, which will reach around a metre tall, and produce plenty of flowers each. These can be cut for the house, or left to enjoy outdoors. Dead-heading will prolong flowering well into autumn. Plants will survive milder winters, but we recommend lifting the tubers and storing somewhere dry and frost-free over winter, or left in pots if that's how you choose to grow them. Sometimes called the “Bunny Ear” Cactus due to its multi branching growths or the “Blind Prickly Pear”. This is a popular beginner cactus as it is easy to grow if a you can provide enough bright light, no over-watering, provide its winter resting period and average room temperatures. In short, keep it by a window and don’t water it for half a year. Simple! Light and Water This plant requires full light for growing for most of the year, except during the winter cycle. For the plant's health, light should be reduced to partial sun during this time. This Cactus is a desert species. It should be given water on a regular basis during its first season in a new pot. This will help it to create a strong root system. The soil should be kept moist, but not soggy. After the first season, more sporadic watering is required. During the winter cycle, the cactus should not be watered at all, with watering to resume in the early spring.
Of the many species of Mammillaria, Cristata is the form known as the Brain Cactus, and it’s not hard to see why! It has multiple convoluted and sinuous growths with new growths overlapping old giving it’s unique structure. Their spines grow close together in various sizes, combined with the hair like spines this green plant gives off a grey-ish hue. Light and Water T need a good amount of light shade to full sun this help to keep the plants healthy, although slow growth. A sun facing desk or shelf, nestled in between other sun loving plants for partial shade will be a perfect spot while also being a talking point display. Water sparingly from March till October (weekly during summertime, if the weather is sunny enough) , with a little fertilizer added. Less or no water during cold winter months, or when night temperatures remain below 10° to prevent root loss. It is sensitive to overwatering.
Commonly known as the “Prickly Pear” cactus, this a decorative variety of Opuntia which produces the edi-ble oval-shaped yellow-red fruit. Opuntia family of cacti are known for their unusual shapes and this one is no exception. With large thorny pads and oval bulbus fruits, this is one of the more alien-looking plants in our collection. Light and Water The plant likes a sunny position and can be placed outdoors in the summer to receive more heat. However hardy this plant is, it is not suitable for UK climates. In winter, the plant likes it dry and cool, so you should bring this plant indoors during winter, or keep it indoors all year round near a sunny windowsill. It prefers di-rect sunlight to indirect light. Prickly pears are extremely drought tolerant. During the growing season don’t water newly propagated pads for the first month. After that, water every two to four weeks for the first year — twice a month in summer and once a month other times of the year/ Prickly pears prefer alkaline to neutral soil if you need to repot them. More importantly, the soil needs to drain well, as residual moisture or puddling can cause the plant to rot.

This is sandier and grittier than ordinary compost which helps keep the plants dry. Keep plants frost free - although some will tolerate low temperature, in general they need to be kept above 8-10C, so make ideal houseplants. While cacti survive on little water, they will not thrive. From April to September, water weekly, allowing the compost to soak up water and drain freely. Feed with a general-purpose feed at 1/4 strength once a fortnight. From October to March, water only when the compost has dried and then only enough to stop plants shrivelling. Keep your plants in bright, but not direct sunlight an east or west facing windowsill is ideal. Dust can build up over time, so keep a soft paintbrush handy to remove it as necessary.
