Not many. But this native of Australia has more going for it than just its 'stroke me' qualities. The tiny leaves that cover its arching branches release a delicious lemony scent when brushed, and its arching branches provide all year round interest. Wherever you plant it its perfect as specimen in the lawn, grown against a wall or fence, or planted in large pots. A real sun lover, give it the brightest spot possible. You need to water a bottlebrush for its first season, but when established plants are extremely drought tolerant. Despite heralding from warmer climes this plant is incredibly tough and will easily cope with temperatures down to -50C. Protect it in harder winters by covering with fleece or grow in pots so it can be moved indoors (a shed, front porch, garage or conservatory would be ideal).Top Tips- Callistemon will flower best when grown in full sun in moist but well drained soil in a sheltered position away from cold winds.- Outdoors, Callistemon (Bottlebrush) look great in mixed borders especially if combined with other drought tolerant plants such as salvias and lavenders.Care GuidePlanting Advice for Callistemon Bottlebrush:- Generally unfussy as to soil, poor soil benefits from the addition of plenty of organic matter.- Once established plants don't need special attention and are generally problem-free.- Pot-grown trees can be planted at any time of the year as long as the soil is not waterlogged or frozen.- Dig a square planting hole 3 x wider than the roots of the shrub you're planting and mix some well-rotted compost or manure with the soil from the hole and use this to re-fill once the shrub is in place.- Before planting soak container-grown shrubs thoroughly and allow to drain.- Remove your Callistemon from its pot and tease out a few of the roots.- Add Mycorrhizal fungi to the roots when planting to help plants establish quicker.- Place your tree in the hole at the same level at the pot, refill, firm, and water well.- Mulch around the base of the plant.- Plants can also be grown in a pot using a good quality soil-based compost.Aftercare Advice for your Bottlebrush:- Although drought-tolerant, Callistemon requires regular watering.- Feed with a general-purpose liquid feed in the growing season and top dress in the spring.- Callistemon can get out of hand under glass so restrictive pruning may be necessary to keep their shape.- Hardy in the UK down to -4°C! In very exposed sites, a fleece cover and mulch will see them safely through the winter. Potted plants can be moved to a cool conservatory or greenhouse.Pruning Advice for Callistemon:- Lightly prune after flowering to keep them under control, cutting just behind the spent bloom.- Callistemons in general don't like hard-pruning, so just remove spent flowerheads immediately after flowering, or trim new growth to maintain shape.Planting Time:All yearFlowering Time:June - JulyAbout You GardenEstablished for over 50 years, our award winning trusted plant supplier are based in South Lincolnshire. Just imagine, glistening, snow-white berries in your garden at Christmas - looking like tiny, sparkling decorations. Callicarpa, also known as the Beauty Berry, is a fabulously decorative shrub, characterized by bunches of berries which brighten the autumn garden with a sparkling hue. Something a little different to the usually seen purple plant - 'Magical Snowstar' is covered in snow-white berries from October to November which contrast beautifully with the autumn colour changes of its leaves. Callicarpa also works well as a decorative addition to Christmas displays, and adds a touch of winter magic to flower arrangements in your home. Growing to around 2.5m (8ft) Callicarpa bodinieri 'Magical Snowstar' is a tightly branching shrub which colours up in the autumn, when the leaves turn yellow before they fall, revealing the perfect snowball berries. If you're keen to cut the stems for indoor displays, then it's best to wait until December for the best colour. If you're keen to incorporate white accents into your garden, then callicarpa is an ideal choice. With a high tolerance for most soil types, it's very easy to grow - Magical Snowstar needs very little in the way of maintenance, just plant it in partial shade and prune out any dead or damaged branches in the spring. The bright berries provide your home with a colourful accent - although wait until the berries are fully grown and have their full colour. Once in a vase, it is important that they are in a cool and not too sunny place to retain the best colour. They're long lasting too, keeping for more than a month once cut as long as you don't drown the stems - they're fine in just 4in of water with a drop of bleach in the vase. You will receive an established plant in a 3L pot, ready for planting out.
Sometimes it's hard for a plant to live up to its name, but Beauty Berry doesn't fail and certainly will not let you down! An absolute knock-out, Callicarpa is grown for its long-lasting display of metallic-purple, almost jewel-like berries that cling in dense clusters to bare branches between autumn and late winter. An award-winning plant, this desirable shrub has received both the RHS Award of Garden Merit, and the RHS accolade of a Plant for Pollinators, making it a reliable and wildlife-friendly plant for the garden. In spring its young foliage is tinged a lovely shade of bronze before turning dark green, while summer interest is provided by a mass of delicate pink flowers. Then, before the berries come into their own, the dark green foliage puts on a fiery show in the autumn, turning golden and red Excellent grown alongside other shrubs in a sunny or slightly shaded position, this bushy deciduous plant grows to around 3m, but can be kept more compact by pruning. An absolute garden must-have, plant a few callicarpas together to get a bumper crop of berries!. Supplied as an established plant in a 3L Pot, plants will grow to approx. 1.8m.
