Creeping phloxes are dainty, colourful evergreen perennials that create wonderful blankets of spring colour during April and May and are just the thing for dotting around borders and make excellent groundcover for keeping weeds at bay. Not quite black but possibly the closest to it in a rose - this beauty will be admired by all in your garden with its sumptuous deep crimson-purple blooms. The Pitchoune range of agapanthus has been grown to have a much more compact habit than most others, but still retaining the large flower clusters and sturdy stems of their taller cousins. Strap-like bright evergreen leaves form in low clumps and give rise to gorgeous, exotic looking sky blue flowers in June and July, and the naturally compact nature of 'Scarery Blue' make it the perfect plant for growing in containers, where it'll look fantastic on a patio or balcony and it's also quite at home toward the front of a border or in a rockery. Like all agapanthus, Pitchoune varieties love rich, well drained soil in full sun or partial shade, and they tolerate drought well. Although hardy to -5°C, some protection will be needed during the coldest winters. Provide a thick mulch in autumn to protect the plants again the hardest frosts, or bring container grown plants under cover. Supplied as an established plant in a 9cm pot, ready for planting, growing to a height of 30cm (1ft) and spread of 50cm (1½ft).
A quirky plant that is grown in Bonsai style, Ficus Ginseng is a robust, easy-care houseplant that will bring a little Zen into your home. The thick, pot-bellied trunk is actually made up of roots and this is where it gets its name - Ginseng is Chinese for 'root'. Originating in Asia, the roots of Ficus Ginseng are grown for 15 years or so before being finished in the greenhouse as bonsai - so your little plant has already had a long life by the time it arrives in your home. Place your Ficus 'Ginseng' in a prominent place so it can be enjoyed all day -and in summer it can even take pride of place outdoors on the patio or decking. Ideal for those venturing into the world of bonsai growing for the first time, Ficus Ginseng is the easiest bonsai tree to grow because it is very tolerant of a range of conditions. Without doubt, the toughest and hardiest of all ornamental bananas in the UK, it is grown for it's dramatic and tough leaves, and once mature, it's amazing and long lasting golden yellow flowers - hence it's name. From high up in the Chinese Mountains of Yunnan, it is naturally very tough, and exposed to temperaturees well below freezing. It forms a much thicker, tougher and sturdier trunk-stem than other bananas, which is very tough and hardy. Even if leaves are damaged by frosts, more and new leaves emerge in Spring, as well as numerous 'pups' round the side. The flower is in fact it's last hurrah, a 6 Month epic flower display, but a sign the plant will die - but fear not - you will have plenty of established pups round the side in a clump, EACH of which will grow and develop to maturity too. It is thus best regarded as a clump forming perennial. It is also much shorter and less vigorous than other huge banana plants too at around 4-5ft tall maximum, making it ideal for large pots in small gardens - grow in full sun or shade, it makes a great talking point. Note - it does not produce any edible banana fruit, not even tiny ornamental ones. Very easy to grow, and a great exotic looking patio focal point.
