Also known as the Indian Bean Tree, Catalpa bignonioides is an incredibly handsome medium sized deciduous tree. A beautiful specimen tree, the foliage is pale green with huge, broad heart shaped leaves that can be 30cm (1ft) long. In late summer panicles of large, exotic, orchid-like white flowers with splashes of maroon and orange appear, often numerous enough to cover the leaves. These are followed in autumn by long, thin, dark brown bean shaped fruits, hence the common name. Fully deserving its coveted RHS Award of Garden Merit, you can be sure that this is a proven garden performer, guaranteed to be suitable for UK gardeners at every level of experience. You can therefore plant this in the garden with confidence, for stunning displays for many years to come. Also recommended by the RHS as a 'Plant for Pollinators', the flowers are a favourite with butterflies and bees. Growing to a height of 6m and spread of 5m in 20 years, and ultimately twice that size, Indian Bean trees cope well with pollution so they're great for city gardens. Protect young trees from late spring frosts and choose a spot sheltered from strong winds which can shred the large leaves. Supplied as 3 x established trees in 9cm pots, ready to plant.
The gorgeous blooms of 'Catawbiensis Grandiflora' are produced in extravagant clusters in May in a wonderful mauve-blue colour with yellow and orange freckles, making this a striking Rhododendron. The striking flowers contrast beautifully with the glossy, dark green leaves that cover this vigorous shrub all year, growing into a rounded evergreen shrub after a few years. 'Catawbiensis Grandiflora' definitely has an exotic look and will look spectacular either planted in blorders or in a large pot as an eye-catching specimen plant. Rhododendrons are low-maintenance shrubs that will perform superbly provided you plant them well and keep them well-watered. Lovers of acid soil, they mostly prefer bright to dappled shade or partial shade, avoiding morning sunlight which can damage buds. As Rhododendron roots are shallow, spreading to sides in search for nutrients, they shouldn't be planted too deeply - remember that they often grow in shallow cracks on mountainsides. Soil does need to be on the acidic side and rich in humus, cool and always moist which will allow established plants to withstand direct mid-day and afternoon sun. Supplied as an established plant in a 21cm pot, reaching a height and spread of 2m (6½ft).

Yew is an English native, and forms superb, dense hedges from 1m to 3m or more, providing excellent screening, almost total shelter from wind and weather and excellent privacy. An evergreen conifer that is easy to manage, it grows at 20-30cm a year, quicker than many people think. It responds well to frequent trimming, yet can be cut just once a year in late summer too. Although plants can grow very large (they are trees after all), by planting them close and clipping every year, you can maintain them at a very respectable height. Potted plants can be planted any time fo the year, at 4 plants per liner Metre of hedge. Do not trim for 2 years after planting. Buy as many as you need for no extra P&P.
