Damp, dry or shaded areas are not the ideal place for a great many plants but Hostas are the ideal solution. Dianthus 'Joy' flowers throughout the summer, with semi-double pastel pink blooms on long stems, growing above clumps of slender, grey-green leaves. It's easy to see how the spectacular 'Flame Lily' got it's name! Now you can create simply stunning displays in your garden with this exotic climbing beauty. Fiery-red, yellow- streaked flowers will dance like flames in the evening breeze across the summer months, providing an eye-catching spectacle and a hint of wonderful fragrance as you sit on your patio. Gloriosa rothschildiana, as it is properly named, is the national flower of Zimbabwe, and is perfect for cutting and creating vivid cut flower displays too, which last several weeks. For best results, plant 3 in a 25-30cm pot, and start off in a warm spot, either on a heater or in an airing cupboard, and keep frost free till May. The corms will store for many weeks in a cool, dry spot if you need to. Place outside for the Summer, and when it warms up they will shoot and twine away - use a few canes or pea sticks for support. They will flower in August and September, and slowly die back underground. keep dry and frost free over Winter for bigger and better displays next year.
'Shooting Star' is one of the most desirable perennials to grow in a shady spot, making a large clump of slender leaves that are topped with 30cm stems holding achingly-beautiful pink flowers with swept back petals between March and April. The flowers even pack a fruity perfume that will infuse the air on a still, warm day. Closely related to bedding primulas, this is a choice plant for growing in light or even full shade, as long as the soil is fairly moist (but not soaking wet). Why not try planting it in borders, rock gardens or under trees and shrubs? A tough plant that heralds from North America, it will die back to ground level in summer but will remerge every spring. Note - this product dies back underground from August, but will shoot away again next March.

Reaching only 120cm in height and width when mature, this stunning ornamental shrub is perfect for patio pots and smaller garden beds and borders in a sunny or semi-shaded spot, and produces a burst of lightly scented, yellow star-shaped flowers in March and April, before many other garden plants wake up. After flowering, its branches will become covered in mid-green leaves. This hardy shrub is easy to grow and needs little pruning, so is ideal for anyone who wants maximum impact with minimum effort.
