Not your ordinary fern, the Bears Paw Fern (Plebodium 'Blue Star) is an attractive and vigorous houseplant with a subtle deep blue-green leaf colour, looking almost like an exotic indoor seaweed! Evergreen, it does not lose its leaves and retains its wonderful colour all year, making it a decorative and striking plant to decorate your home - perfect to give as a gift or a housewarming present. As the plant grows, the fronds develop finger-shaped lobes as they mature, held on long stems and looking very much like an outstretched paw, hence its more common name of Bear's Paw or Rabbit Foot. Easy to grow and look after, your Bear's Paw will tolerate low light and as a natural inhabitant of tropical rainforests, Plebodium does like its humidity high so is perfect for a bathroom or kitchen where it will thrive in a bright spot, out of direct sunlight. Spikes of intensely fragrant, waxy white flowers are produced throughout summer, which make captivating cut flowers. The semi-double, fragrant tuberose flowers of this relatively unknown bulb are carried above narrow, lance shapes leaves. It can also be grown outdoors in containers or sheltered sunny borders, if it is lifted and stored frost-free over winter. Height: 120cm (48). Spread: 15cm (6).

Commonly known as the “Prickly Pear” cactus, this a decorative variety of Opuntia which produces the edi-ble oval-shaped yellow-red fruit. Opuntia family of cacti are known for their unusual shapes and this one is no exception. With large thorny pads and oval bulbus fruits, this is one of the more alien-looking plants in our collection. Light and Water The plant likes a sunny position and can be placed outdoors in the summer to receive more heat. However hardy this plant is, it is not suitable for UK climates. In winter, the plant likes it dry and cool, so you should bring this plant indoors during winter, or keep it indoors all year round near a sunny windowsill. It prefers di-rect sunlight to indirect light. Prickly pears are extremely drought tolerant. During the growing season don’t water newly propagated pads for the first month. After that, water every two to four weeks for the first year — twice a month in summer and once a month other times of the year/ Prickly pears prefer alkaline to neutral soil if you need to repot them. More importantly, the soil needs to drain well, as residual moisture or puddling can cause the plant to rot.
