Most Magnolia are pink or shades thereof, so this rare and fabulously unique hybrid 'Yellow Bird' really is unusual. Magnolia Yellow Bird bears the most wonderful huge lemon-yellow flowers, sometimes streaked lime green, emerging just before the deep green leaves unfurl in the spring. Easy to grow, it's hardy to -15C (although best to avoid windy sites) and with just a little prune to shape will form a nice, low maintenance, medium sized specimen garden tree. Not just a plant for the garden, you can also plant up in a large patio container and place by a doorway, gateway or pathway where it will make a superb eye-catching feature, or on a patio where you can really enjoy the beauty. Supplied as an established plant in a 3Lpot,ready for immediate planting.Top Tips- Plant magnolias in a sunny or semi shaded position with protection from cold winds and hard spring frosts. Magnolias prefer a rich, moist, well drained, acid to neutral soil so incorporate plenty of well-rotted manure or garden compost to improve the soil prior to planting. Magnolia plants establish quicker when their roots are shaded so apply a mulch of rotted bark chips, manure or garden compost after planting, taking care not to mound it around the stem of the plant.Care Guide- When planting, choose your site carefully as magnolias dislike being moved.- Dig a hole twice the width of the roots, forking over the bottom to loosen the soil, and add some good quality fertiliser such as Blood Fish & Bone.- Aim to plant at the same depth as it was in the pot.- Holding the tree or plant upright in position with one hand, slowly backfill the hole with soil- Use your heel to compact the soil around the plant to ensure good contact around the roots.- If you're planting into pots, place some old rocks, stones or gravel in the bottom of the pot for drainage and ballast and use the best compost you can buy - an equal mix of ericaceous compost with John Innes No. 3 is ideal.- For tall trees and shrubs, we highly recommend using our Tree Planting Kit. Protect from frost and winds when young- Dig a planting hole 3 x wider than the roots of the shrub you're planting and mix some well-rotted compost or manure with the soil from the hole and use this to re-fill once the shrub is in place.- We've found that a square hole is better than a round one as the new roots, once they reach the edges tend to grow in a circle round the circumference of the hole whereas when they reach the corners of a square hole, they find it easier to grow through.- Before planting soak container-grown shrubs thoroughly and allow to drain.- Remove the plant from its pot and tease out a few of the roots then add Mycorrhizal fungi to the roots when planting to help plants establish quicker.- Place your shrub in the hole at the same level at the pot and refill the hole with the earth removed (backfilling).- Firm in the soil with your heel, avoiding the root ball and water well.- Mulch around the base of the plant with a collar, compost, gravel, bark etc.- If you're planting into pots, place some old rocks, stones or gravel in the bottom of the pot for drainage and ballast. Please see description below for full product details.Not as recent marketing would have you believe a plant that has been created for men, but rather a new and exciting development in succulent breeding that is taking the gardening world by storm. A cross between the Manfreda and the Agave, Mangaves are becoming increasingly popular as the interest in Xeric landscaping grows - the process of gardening that reduces or eliminates the need for supplemental moisture from watering. Manfredas have rosettes of coloured leaves branching from a very short stem, often with creamy, tubular flowers at the end of a long stalk. Agaves on the other hand are well known for their strong succulent leaves that form large rosettes. These interesting hybrids combine the best features of both types the better growth rate and the interesting patterns and colours of Manfreda, and the habit and refinement of Agave. Varieties can be spotted, blotched or plain green in various shades and with an interesting texture, they can be a bit pointy, but definitely not as prickly as a cactus. Some of the varieties have really interesting leaf shape too, from slim and long to short and broad and wavy or straight too. 'Mission to Mars' is a striking variety of Mangave with intense red coloration to the leaves which gives rise to its name. The thick green leaves are heavily speckled with burgundy red and form a gently arching habit with margins that curl upward. This highlights the cinnamon-coloured spines giving the plant an appearance much like a tropical bromeliad. Compact in growth and visually stunning, Mangaves make a perfect patio plant, sitting happily in a pot through the summer on your decking or balcony, they will then make a perfect houseplant through the winter in a bright room. All varieties should be watered only sparingly as they are ideally suited to dessert, arid conditions and are lovers of warm temperatures - they make an ideal specimen for a greenhouse or as a houseplant for a bright rooms - indeed anything less than 65F will result in the plant becoming dormant. Supplied as an established plant in a 15cm pot, ready for immediate potting on. Eventual height and width 25cm x 55cm (10 x 22in).Top Tips- Overwintering plants should be kept them cool with the soil barely moist. Medlars are a somewhat old-fashioned fruit in today's supermarket world, but are a spectacular and rewarding specimen tree. A fabulous Spring blossoming tree, it produces gorgeous pink blossom, and in late Autumn unusual fruits, not exactly a thing of beauty, and which are tart if eaten from the tree, but sweeten beautifully if picked and ripened for a few weeks, and can keep for Months in cool and dry conditions. They then make excellent jellies, as well as cooking well in mixed fruit pies and puddings though, fresh from the trees. Something really different, yet easy for the productive orchard garden!
