Colourful and compact, these 'Festival Mix' dwarf lupins have been specially blended to combine glorious jewel-like tones ranging from soft white and pale lemon-yellow to darker hues of pink, cerise and purple. The beautifully bold, candle-like blooms rise up through starry mounds of lush green, palmate leaves and are perfect for bringing joyful colour and structure to your summer garden. Members of the legume family, the petals on the tall flower spikes have a pea-like structure, giving off a delicate, peppery aroma that will attract bees, butterflies and other pollinators. Allium 'Mount Everest' is a fabulously statuesque variety with huge flowerheads that look like exploding white fireworks. Made up of around fifty individual star shaped flowers, they form stunning globes up to 15 cm (6 in) in diameter. Easily growing to 1.2 m (4 ft) tall, the robust, straight flower stems rise up high about the broad, strap-like green foliage, and look stunning as the sway amongst other plants. Recommended by the RHS as a 'Plant for Pollinators' the flowers are produced throughout May and June and are a favourite with butterflies, bees and other pollinating insects. As the flowerheads gradually turn to seed, they maintain their shape and will look amazing left on the plant over the winter, especially on frosty days. They're also magificent as cut flowers with there huge size creating bold, extravagant arrangements, whether still in bloom or as dried seed heads - which can last for years. Fully deserving its coveted RHS Award of Garden Merit, you can be sure that this is a proven garden performer, guaranteed to be suitable for UK gardeners at every level of experience. Preferring a sunny location, alliums are not too fussy about soil type and will grow well, naturalising and multiplying over the years. An exceptional variety that is early to crop and has a long picking season, 'Polestar' produces high yields of smooth runner bean pods that have a sweet flavour and crisp, fleshy texture. If not left too long on the vine, these beans are stringless, so for best taste and texture, pick when they reach 15-20cm (6-8in) in length. A reliable and long-standing favourite of vegetable growers, this heavy cropping variety will produce plenty of delicious fresh beans for your plate and plenty more for the freezer. Versatile and nutritious, they are a classic cooked veg, but the young beans also taste great raw - try shredding or slicing them into a salad or using as a baton for dips. For best results, sow the seeds indoors in pots from April to May for transplanting outside in May to June; or sow from April to May outdoors, directly into their cropping position. To get the growing season off to an earlier start, sow them in containers in your greenhouse. The plants produce pretty red flowers, which are very attractive to bees and other beneficial insects. Grow alongside sweet peas as these will draw in more insects that will help pollinate the runner beans and produce an even bigger crop. As well as 'Polestar' being a rewarding bean to grow, the beans are highly nutritious as they are rich in vitamin C and a good source of fibre. Trim and blanch surplus crops to store in an airtight container or bag in the freezer. They will freeze well, retaining good flavour and texture when cooked from frozen. From the strikingly colourful 'parrot tulip' group 'Estella Rijnveld' is one of the most spectacular varieties around with frilly double blooms and flame streaked petals that have a wonderfully exotic feel to them. On warm spring days the blooms open wide and become almost flat - often 4in or more across - before closing again in the evening. For best effect plant in close groups in a sunny spot - they're perfect in close groups in pots and containers on the patio. As with all our other tulips, they make beautiful cut flower displays - simply cut the long stems and place in groups in vases to dress up windowsills or mantelpieces. They look truly spectacular but they're really not hard to grow and are perfect as an easy solution to adding bold spring colour with a twist to your garden next spring. Also known as the 'Summer Snowflake', this is a relative of the snowdrop, which it closely resembles. However, it is much taller and flowers later, during March and April. The gently arching flower stems reach up to 50 cm tall, and carry lovely, dainty pendant blooms in groups, or umbels, of three to five but sometimes as many as seven. The beautiful flowers are pure white with a green spot at the end of each petal. Leucojum prefers to grow in moist, fertile soils, making it a great choice for planting around water margins such as by a pond or stream. It's also happy in borders and when grown in pots it makes a great early season cut flower. It will quickly establish itself and naturalise, increasing your stock. With the popularity of ornamental grasses on the rise in recent years, they have quickly become a must-have for every garden. With so many exciting varieties in different sizes and colours, why not start a collection? Festuca 'Sunrise' is a wonderful, compact grass that grows into a mound of blue-green, arching foliage. In late summer deep orange flowering stems rise above the leaves, moving beautifully in the breeze. Then, as autumn arrives, the ends of the leaves turn to a warm shade of copper. An exceptionally attractive little grass, 'Sunrise' looks particularly good planted in groups in a gravel garden, or on its own in an architectural pot for a contemporary balcony or patio feature. 'Sunrise' will thrive in sun or partial shade and is completely winter hardy to -20°C as well as being drought tolerant. It needs no maintenance apart from the trimming of faded flower stems if you wish, but if left on the plant they give attractive winter interest, especial during a frost.
