Japanese maples (Acer palmatum) are small, deciduous trees prized for their graceful habit, autumn colour and beautiful foliage, and this colourful mix of three hardy plants will give you a riot of colour through the year. Starting in the spring, you'll see the acid green, green and red leaves gradually emerge from the individual plants, then into summer, they'll transition through green and red and then, just as you thought the colours couldn't get any better, you'll get shades of fiery orange, yellow and red as the autumn progresses. Grown together in a single pot, our Acer collection consists of three different varieties. An absolutely superb feature for your patio or decking, you can also try placing these miniature trees in a flower border where the foliage will contrast magically with colourful perennial flowers. Also known as New Zealand Flax, Phormium 'Jester' is a robust, fully hardy evergreen which forms a dense clump of sword-like leaves - a really great plant for adding a bit of a statement to your garden. Stunning in a border and stylish in a container, this phormium plant has particularly striking, apricot-pink and lime-green foliage, and is a compact form - meaning that it won't overshadow everything in your garden plus you can grow it in a pot! Phormiums prefer a hot dry site (although will tolerate partial shade) and make a great candidate for a Mediterranean garden or a gravel garden where their upright leaves make a great foil for many other coloured plants. The soft, bright golden-yellow foliage of Cupressus 'Goldcrest' will provide your garden with healthy colour all year round and (in keeping with its name) gives off a fresh, lemon scent when foliage is crushed or cut - which is said to deter biting insects from that area of your garden. Medlars are a somewhat old-fashioned fruit in today's supermarket world, but are a spectacular and rewarding specimen tree. A fabulous Spring blossoming tree, it produces gorgeous pink blossom, and in late Autumn unusual fruits, not exactly a thing of beauty, and which are tart if eaten from the tree, but sweeten beautifully if picked and ripened for a few weeks, and can keep for Months in cool and dry conditions.
