A popular and spectacular houseplant, Fatsia japonica produces huge, dark green, deeply divided palmate leaves. The architectural shape makes it a dramatic, tropical feature, and these magnificent plants really need very little attention. Also known as the Castor Oil plant or Japanese Aralia, Fatsia plants are native to southern Japan, Korea and Taiwan where they grow in moist shaded areas and will easily reach 5m (16ft) in height. As a houseplant, it grows to just a fraction of that size, but the amazing leaves still maintain their handsome glossiness, growing up to a foot across. Happiest in a shady part of the house, away from direct sun, with good moisture levels. It shouldn't be allowed to dry out but shouldn't sit in water either. Once mature, unusual, exotic-looking umbrellas of creamy white flowers are produced in the autumn, followed by deep maroon berries. Leafy tropical houseplants like this help to clean the air in your home and can actually improve the environment, clearing the air, removing toxins and adding valuable oxygen to the air that we breathe. Fatsia japonica holds a coveted RHS Award of Garden Merit, so you can be sure that this is a proven performer. Supplied as a potted plant, 60cm (2ft) tall in a 21cm pot, growing to 2m (6½ft) tall.

Top Tips- Older plants will easily tolerate rough treatment and the odd hack back is soon forgotten with a burst of new growth.Care GuidePlanting Advice for Fatsia japonica:- Shrub roots generally tend to spread out rather than down, so dig a planting hole 3 x wider than the roots of the shrub you're planting and mix some well-rotted compost or manure with the soil from the hole and use this to re-fill one the shrub is in place.- We've found that a square hole is better than a round one as the new roots, once they reach the edges tend to grow in a circle round the circumference of the hole whereas when they reach the corners of a square hole, they find it easier to grow through.- Before planting soak container-grown shrubs thoroughly and allow to drain.- Remove the plant from its pot and tease out a few of the roots.- Add Mycorrhizal fungi to the roots when planting to help plants establish quicker.- Place your shrub in the hole at the same level at the pot.- Refill the hole with the earth removed (backfilling).- Firm in the soil with your heel, avoiding the root ball.- Water well.- Mulch around the base of the plant with a collar, compost, gravel, bark etc.Aftercare advice for your Fatsia plant:- Best in shade where it will bring an almost tropical look to beds and borders.- Not fussy with soil type and in fact is happiest in heavy clay.- Protect plants from cold, drying winds.- Older leaves may turn yellow and then brown - just trim them off leaving a 1' stub which quickly falls off.- Leaves will blacken in extreme cold (-4°C or below) but miraculously the plant will quickly recover as the temperature rises - any damaged foliage can then be cut back.Pruning Advice for your Castor oil plant:- Prune lightly in mid to late spring, trimming back any shoots that spoil its shape.Planting Time:All yearFlowering Time:September - NovemberFruiting Time:October - NovemberAbout You GardenEstablished for over 50 years, our award winning trusted plant supplier are based in South Lincolnshire.
