As pretty as one of Monet's masterpieces, this delightfully small and compact flowering shrub really has the most beautiful 3-colour foliage. Perfect for mixed borders and containers. Reaching around 1m in height and width, Weigela 'Monet' is a lovely spring-flowering shrub, with big, lipstick-pink tubular flowers in spring. However, the real highlight is its foliage which forms a neat mound of pink-blushed leaves. Each green leaf is edged with a variable cream variegation, with varying tints of rose-pink flushing throughout. Variegation will change depending on light exposure - whiter variegation develops in shade and deepest pink in full sun - nevertheless a picture wherever it is grown! Due to its compact nature, it's perfect in pots as a feature plant or in the front of smaller gardens. An absolute gem of a winter flowering plant, little seen but a really good winter garden plant, not grown widely enough. In late winter and early spring, before there's much colour about at all, even before daffodils, it produces intriguing yellow and cream flowers, lightly scented, smothered over bare stems, as flowers are produced before the leaves. It is a relative of the Daphne, sharing it's preference for cool, lightly shaded spots. Martin distinctly remembers being blown away by the first sight and smell of this plant, a large specimen on a remote Dutch Nursery, on a wet, windy and grey February afternoon, but finding much stock has been a challenge. Now we have some, it deserves a space in many gardens.
A favourite in the cottage garden, this tall and slender plant is a magnificent sight in late summer when each stem is clothed in ruffled bright pink pompom blooms. Hollyhock rosea 'Pleniflora' looks spectacular grown in large groups. It also grows well at the back of the border where it provides a dramatic backdrop to other, smaller flowering plants. Tall and spectacular, with arching leaves and bronze feathery panicles in summer, this ornamental grass makes a fine feature in the border. Calamagrostis x acutiflora 'Karl Foerster' can also be planted to form a feathery screen in the garden or grown in clumps in a gravel garden where its tall stems will sway and rustle in the breeze. Coreopsis grandiflora 'Sunray' is a little ray of sunshine to brighten up your garden in spring and summer with its glorious blooms. These semi-double flowers are bright yellow and attract bees with their rich nectar, making them well-suited to wildlife gardens. Pure white flowers in late winter contrast with bright evergreen foliage, making Erica x darleyensis f. albiflora 'White Perfection' a great choice for the front of the border or rockery. It's good for wildlife too, as the flowers provide a valuable source of nectar early in the year. Unlike most Heathers which prefer acid soil, this Erica x darleyensis cultivar will tolerate almost any well drained soil, where it will gradually form spreading clumps of weed-suppressing ground cover.
