Yew is an English native, and forms superb, dense hedges from 1m to 3m or more, providing excellent screening, almost total shelter from wind and weather and excellent privacy. An evergreen conifer that is easy to manage, it grows at 20-30cm a year, quicker than many people think. It responds well to frequent trimming, yet can be cut just once a year in late summer too. Although plants can grow very large (they are trees after all), by planting them close and clipping every year, you can maintain them at a very respectable height. Potted plants can be planted any time fo the year, at 4 plants per liner Metre of hedge. Do not trim for 2 years after planting. Buy as many as you need for no extra P&P.

Philadelphus in full flower are one of the sights and scents of early summer! Also known as 'Mock Orange' for the sweet citrussy scent of it's pure white blooms it's a must have plant for any garden. Virginal is a fast growing variety that is perfect as a feature plant at the back of the border, although vigorous it can be easily shaped by pruning after flowering in late summer. Pure white double blooms with their lovely scent are borne from late May to July. A deciduous bush it bears mid green oval leaves and likes a sunny spot and good drainage. A hazel hedge is always going to look attractive, no matter what time of year. In spring, masses of yellow-green catkins appear before the dense foliage smothers the stems from tip to toe. Later in the year a heavy crop of cobnuts will form which are always a Christmas favourite!
Beech is the perfect candidate for hedging and has traditionally been used on many large estates . Over winter, Beech tends to hold onto most of its dead leaves, and sheds them in the spring when the new shoots start to appear, helping to keep privacy to a maximum.
