Yew is an English native, and forms superb, dense hedges from 1m to 3m or more, providing excellent screening, almost total shelter from wind and weather and excellent privacy. An evergreen conifer that is easy to manage, it grows at 20-30cm a year, quicker than many people think. It responds well to frequent trimming, yet can be cut just once a year in late summer too. Although plants can grow very large (they are trees after all), by planting them close and clipping every year, you can maintain them at a very respectable height. Philadelphus in full flower are one of the sights and scents of early summer! Also known as 'Mock Orange' for the sweet citrussy scent of it's pure white blooms it's a must have plant for any garden. For an unusually coloured hedgerow, Copper beech is the perfect candidate. It can be grown to almost any height as a hedge or privacy screen and will maintain a good density and tidy shape, usually only needing to be clipped once or twice a year.
