'Golden Smaragd' is a wonderful variety of Thuja, evergreen conifers that grow with a naturally narrow, conical habit. Slow-growing, with sprays of bright yellow-green aromatic foliage, 'Golden Smaragd' is a handsome and colourful decorative tree, ideal as a specimen and perfect for bringing year-round height and structure to your beds and borders, and well suited to container growing too. Thuja and incredibly easy to grow, needs hardy any maintenance and its naturally slow growth means that it doesn't need regular trimming to keep it in shape, particularly useful if you're growing it as a hedge where it'll provide excellent screening but with little effort. It's also amazingly hardy, right down to -45°C, so there is no chance that it'll be damaged in even the harshest British winter, although protection from cold, drying winter winds when young will help it to establish. A versatile tree for any part of the garden, Thuja isn't fussy about soil and will thrive whether it's acid, alkaline or neutral, as long as it's well drained. Supplied as an established plant in a 9cm pot, ready for planting, growing up to 5m (16½ft) tall and 1.7m (5½ft) wide after 20 years.

Good cooks prefer shallots to onions as they know that the taste is far superior and lifts any full flavoured savoury dish that otherwise would include onions. They're delicious peeled and pickled too and the perfect accompaniment to good cheese. Shallots are easy to grow in most garden soils and just need a sunny spot - plant a single bulb and it grows and divides through spring and summer giving as many as 6 or 8 new bulbs to harvest at the end of summer. The green foliage is also tasty used in summer salads but use sparingly to make sure of the best bulb harvest! Dry and keep indoors, using when needed, shallots keep really well and often last through to spring. Any you have left can be planted back so keeping your own stock over the years. Golden Gourmet is a favourite garden variety giving a heavy crop of round brown skinned shallots with a great taste and which are very good keepers.

A tall growing variety with red leaf nodes and lovely mauve flowers followed by deliciously sweet pale golden-yellow, crisp pods. Best picked regularly before the peas swell in the pods, ideal steamed whole or added to stir fries. Mangetout Golden Sweet grows to 210cm (7ft) so needs support.
A superb choice for growers on cool or wet soils, where Sweetcorn 'Golden Gate? shows markedly better establishment over other varieties. The 22cm (8?) long cobs boast 20 rows of grains on each cob. This super sweet, mid season variety has a deliciously sweet flavour, which can be enjoyed barbecued, steamed or boiled.

A dwarf variety with branching stems and a neat, bushy habit. Golden Berry 'Pineapple' produces heavy crops of tangy pineapple flavoured fruits in late summer and autumn. The bright orange berries are enclosed by a papery husk creating an attractive Chinese lantern appearance. Physalis peruviana is half hardy and therefore tends to be grown as an annual in the UK.
