Slowly growing into large clumps, Red Baron boasts 50cm long leaves that are green near the base, turning more intensively red towards its tips. Equally at home in semi-shade as it is full sun, this grass is great for making a statement in pots or can be grown alongside perennials or other grasses in beds. If you really want to make an impact, plant it en masse, in swathes or as an edging plant alongside a path. It is one of the very few so-called 'black' plants that are actually black - a year-round matt black backdrop to set off bolder and brighter garden features. It is a very slow-spreading, carpet-forming plant, and can remain undisturbed for years, eventually forming a fair-sized clump. You can then chop it up with a spade in spring and create many more plants for free! Superb when interplanted with small perennials, use it also as groundcover, be it in shade or sun, drought or wet - it is also great in modern mixed container plantings. Easy to grow and fully hardy, this plant is a real time saver, its evergreen colour a fabulous foil for bright golds, oranges and limes. Carex buchananii - tall, upright arcs of chocolate to rusty brown foliage, with a delicate swirl at the end of the hundreds of leaves. Great for autumnal planters. Ht 40cm Carex oshimensis 'Evergold' - a real tough beauty, the evergreen leaves are rich green, with golden edges down both sides. They form neat clumps, that cascade down, making them ideal in tubs and planters where they can trail. Ht to 20cm, spread 40cm.
