Picking plump, juicy figs straight from a tree is one of life's greatest pleasures, especially when served up with some wafer thin slices of Parma ham and a drizzle of honey. Divine! Boasting masses of large, pear-shaped fruit with deep red flesh that are ready for picking in late summer and early autumn, Brown Turkey is perfect in a large pot or grown in the ground. Even before the fruit is ripe the large shrub or small tree adds a presence to the garden as branches are clothed with large, deeply lobed leaves. Despite originating from warmer climates, this amazing fig is incredibly tough, easily shrugging off temperatures down to -15°C in the UK. Extremely drought tolerant when established, figs do best in a brightly lit, sunny spot. Keep plants productive and compact by restricting roots by growing in large pots or planting in 60cm square planting holes, filling the base with a layer of gravel and line sides with paving slabs.
Hardy Geraniums, or 'Cranesbills' as they are commonly known, are one of the easiest and best garden performers for low maintenance, flowering displays and versatility to growing conditions. Everyone should find space for them! Not to be confused with bedding Geraniums, more correctly called Pelargoniums, these really are one of the most versatile plants - sun or shade, wet or dry, pots or garden, they just keep doing their thing year after year. From their dormant state over-winter, in spring they produce neat and tidy small domes of leaves, which are smothered in flowers in Summer. A mecca for bees, they will be buzzing with activity on sunny days. In Autumn, the leaves often turn red orange too. A simple trim off of old growth in Autumn is all they need - what could be easier.
The world's first Hardy Gerbera in a range of bright, zingy neon colours, the Garvinea series was originally launched to great acclaim across Europe. Bringing the popular florists' gerbera flowers to a garden perennial, they give an amazing 7 months of colour from spring to autumn every year - not many plants can do that! Well, now they have got even better. The breeders in Holland who created them have developed an improved series with much bigger flowers, and even longer lasting performance. called the 'Sweet Series', we are delighted to be able to bring you some of the limited stock. Retaining the same benefits of being winter hardy to around -8°C (although avoid severe winter wet), and flowering for 3 seasons of colour, their highly distinctive flowers simply keep coming - up to 50 on a 2-year-old plant. We love them in traditional terracotta pots, in the sun, or grown in well-drained borders at the front, where they will amaze you with their persistence of flowering and sheer flower number. In winter they are herbaceous, so die back completely underground, to emerge bigger and better next year. You will get one plant each about to flower of: 'Sweet Glow' - deep warm orange'Sweet Smile' - warm honey yellow'Sweet Spice' - bright magenta purple
