In Japan this hardy shrub has long been used for making a refreshing herbal brew. Better known as Amacha, this sweetly flavoured tea is made from the dried leaves of Hydrangea serrata.
The ghostly blooms of this dwarf Hydrangea take on a wonderful luminosity at dusk. The rounded, cone-shaped flower heads are creamy-white with a pale green tint, and borne in profusion throughout summer.
The strawberry sundae coloured blooms of this hydrangea will transform balconies and patios. Short red-brown stems bear abundant green and white flowers which turn pink from August onwards. Hydrangea 'Sundae Fraise' is more compact than its cousin 'Vanilla Fraise', so is ideal for small gardens and containers. From May until September, this hardy shrub produces copious amounts of pretty, lacecap blooms, the petals of which can be either delicate pink or bold blue depending on soil acidity. If its seemingly endless season isn't enough to make you 'Twist & Shout', the plant's red stems also look lovely against its foliage, which is dark green in colour.
