The only surviving member of an ancient species of tree, Ginkgo biloba is often referred to as a living fossil with some preserved specimens dating back 270 million years! Thought to have been extinct, it was rediscovered in China in the late 17th Century and soon distributed around the world in both urban and rural gardens and streets. Also known as the Maidenhair Tree, for gardeners, Ginkgo is possibly one of the most attractive and useful trees that you can plant in your garden with its attractive roughly conical shape and fan-shaped leaves which turn yellow in autumn. The distinctive, deciduous leaves of Ginkgo biloba give a hint at its ancient heritage being very basic in structure. The curious frilled lobes resemble a duck's foot and take on buttery tones in the autumn before fallen suddenly - often within a few days. A tree that enjoys full sunshine and most soil types, Ginkgo is easy to grow and can even be grown in a pot on your patio or balcony. They adapt well to a restricted root system and are extremely resistant to pruning, so our growers have been able to create this beautiful standard plant with its ball of foliage - testament to their resilience. Ginkgo 'Mariken' is more of a recent introduction to the family and is one of the best Ginkgoes for a large container having a very slow rate of growth. Gingkoes are dioecious in that there are both male and female plants. As well as its stunning autumn colour, older female Ginkgo trees may produce large, sunshine-coloured fruits in warm summers. These have a distinctive aroma and, along with the leaves, are often used in traditional Chinese medicine - indeed if you search the internet, you'll see endless reference to supplements and anecdotal health benefits ranging from memory cures to a longer life. While the health claims may remain unproven, something that we do know is that Ginkgo absorbs pollutants, with a number of studies proving that they are great at absorbing Carbon and other nasties from the air, making them a favourite of town planners for fighting urban pollution with the potential to improve local air quality. Supplied as an established standard plant in a 3L pot, ready for planting out or potting on.

'Pink Fir Apple' is an unusual variety. This easy-to-grow second early potato is extremely productive, with huge harvests of up to 35-40 or more evenly sized tubers from each plant. These lovely potatoes have an unusual elongated shape with pink skins and tender creamy yellow flesh and a nutty flavour. Their waxy texture remains firm during cooking, making them a perfect choice for potato salad, but also great for boiling and chipping. There is absolutely no need to peel them unless you are using them for mash. A worthy recipient of the RHS Award of Garden Merit, 'Pink Fir Apple' has good resistance to disease and its compact habit means it will tolerate fairly exposed positions. Once the seed potatoes have produced shoots or chits, they will be ready to plant directly into a prepared bed or large bags or containers from mid-March, preferably after the frosts have gone. Young potatoes can be harvested from 13-17 weeks after planting. Supplied as a 2.5kg bag of seed potatoes (approx. 30-35 tubers) ready to prepare indoors for planting out in the spring.
'Germidour' is one of the most satisfying varieties of garlic you can grow, producing lovely large and compact bulbs with white, papery skins that are attractively streaked with pinky-purple. It has a mild, subtle flavour and delicate aroma - perfect for a wide variety of savoury dishes whether used raw in salad dressings or for cooking. Originating in France, this worthy winner of the RHS Award of Garden Merit is well suited to the UK climate, being virus-free and a reliable cropper with bulbs that typically contain about 10-12 succulent cloves. This softneck type garlic doesn't produce flower stems but will mature earlier than hardneck types and also has better storage properties - up to 3 months or more in good condition after harvesting. The garlic that is most commonly sold in supermarkets is softneck - but don't be tempted to propagate shop-bought garlic as it will be more prone to disease and crop far less efficiently than plants grown from these superior horticultural quality bulbs. Traditionally, garlic is planted on the shortest day of the year (21-22 December) and harvested on the longest (20-22 June), although it can be planted in the autumn or spring. Autumn plantings will produce earlier crops and although winter hardy, may benefit from protection from the cold - or can be grown in a greenhouse or tunnel. If planting in the spring, just wait until the frosts have gone before placing the cloves in the ground. 'Germidour' will thrive in a sunny spot in most well-draining soils. If your soil is heavy, prepare the plot in advance by digging in some well-rotted garden compost, and also some sand or grit, to improve fertility and drainage. Alternatively, grow in good-quality compost in raised beds, trugs or containers. Garlic doesn't take up much room, making it an ideal choice for small-space gardening. It is a good companion plant for roses and other plants or vegetables that are vulnerable to greenfly as its aroma will help to repel those little beasts! Supplied as 2 bulbs ready to split into approximately 10-12 cloves for planting.Grows up to 60cm (24in) height by 15cm (6in) spread.
This is a fabulous new colour addition to the amazing Bottlebrush family. No prizes for guessing where they get their name from - their classic spring flowers zing with intense colour. Usually red, this is the first widely available pink, and what a neon-pink it is too! Each flower is made up of thousands of thin stamens, each pollen rich, so become a mecca for bees and butterflies early in the season. Flowering in spring and early summer, it is great to attract early season pollinators to fruit - and sometimes has a mini flush of flowers again in autumn. Grow in a pot in a warm and sunny spot, in a well-drained mix. A half-hardy shrub, give winter protection in colder, windier spots, as early leaves and growth can be damaged.

Hardy throughout most of the UK, the silk tree benefits from planting near a south-facing wall for a little winter protection, helping it to retain its leaves for a little longer into the autumn. The dainty leaves of the silk tree slowly close during the night and during periods of heavy rain to protect itself from damage, giving it an alternative name of 'night sleeper'. In Japan its common names (of which there are several) all mean 'sleeping tree', so don't be surprised if your tree looks a little droopy at times - it's just resting! Reaching up to 4 x 2.5m, you will receive an established young plant in a 3L pot.
