This strange and fascinating member of the Iris family looks as though it would be at home in an aquarium! Growing from a small corm, flesh sword like leaves appear in early summer followed by the intricately beautiful fragrant flowers borne on 40cm stems. As a half hardy plant Ferraria is best grown in a pot - it like good drainage so mix 30% coarse sand with your compost. Flowers appear in spring and early summer after which the pot can be left to dry as bulbs become dormant. At the end of summer lift and replant - you'll find the bulbs multiply from year to year so you'll soon have a plentiful crop of this rare beauty!
The embodiment of the fleur-de-lis, the iris is a powerful symbol of faith, hope and power, and this scintillating 'Peacock Mix' contains some of the most attractive colours available at the moment. With a sultry mix of classic tones, the stunning, ruffled, blousy blooms appear over evergreen clumps of narrow, architectural leaves which provide year-round structure. Iris reticulata Blue is a dwarf, early flowering iris that is a native of mountainous parts of Russia, Turkey and Iran. Narrow, erect foliage gives rise to richly coloured flower stems with vibrant cobalt blue blooms that have a bright golden yellow and white markings along the centre of each petal, giving them an orchid-like look. Appearing in March and April, the flowers are loved by bees and a host of other pollinators that appreciate the early source of nectar, and each one carries a wonderful fragrance. Iris reticulata make a wonderful display when planted together in pots and they also work well in rock and gravel gardens or try them as a gorgeous centrepiece for your patio table. Preferring well drained soil and a sunny location, they will happily naturalise and spread, returning bigger and better every year. The bulbs can be lifted and divided in autumn. Supplied as 25 bulbs, size 5/7 ready for planting in autumn, growing to a height of 15 cm (6 in) and spread of 10 cm (4 in).
A magnificent Dutch Iris, 'Lion King' actually describes the stunning colour of its flowers rather well. The large and extravagant two-tone blooms have falls, which are the lower petals, in golden yellow with burgundy stripes and standards, or upper petals, in copper with a flush of pink. Unlike other varieties of Iris that grow from rhizomes, Dutch Iris grow from bulbs and are superb in pots or borders where they will naturalise to increase your stock of these beautiful plants. The long, strappy grey-green leaves and incredibly strong flower stems look fantastic planted in groups, and they are excellent cut flowers too. Supplied as a pack of 25 bulbs, growing to a height of 50 cm (20 in) and width of 20 cm (8 in).
