Also known as the velvet honeysuckle, Jacobinia suberecta is an unusual and highly desirable perennial that is rarely offered for sale - so this is your opportunity to grow something different that none of your friends are likely to have - or even know about! One of those plants that is a great all-round garden performer, Jacobinia will provide vibrant colour and form all year round and is perfect whether displayed in a pot or planted in the garden border. Giving you a long flowering display from late spring to autumn, the fiery orange, tubular blooms are often visited by hummingbirds in its native South America - and although we can't guarantee that in the UK, we're sure that this delightful bush will attract other wildlife into your garden. In addition to its flowers, the soft velvet leaves are a real feature, emerging downy silver and ageing to a glossy green which gives a striking contrast to the attractive flowers. Perfect for growing between other perennials and shrubs as it reaches just 1.5m wide and 1m high, Jacobinia is semi-evergreen (plants may lose their leaves in winter) giving year-round colour and structure. Easy to grow and winter hardy down to -7°C, this is a plant that is not fussy with regard to soil and will tolerate most types, including dry and coastal soils.
Also known as Justicia rizzinii, this winter-flowering shrub is also known as the Brazilian Fuchsia on account of its amazing yellow and scarlet fuchsia-like blooms. A sight to behold when in full bloom, this evergreen is a compact, tender variety growing to around 60cm (2ft) in height and making an ideal conservatory or heated greenhouse plant that can live short-term outside as a summer patio plant. Although it need protection from frost, the reward that you get is well worth the little extra effort - flowering from late autumn to early spring the dainty nodding clusters of tubular blooms are around 2cm in length and contrast magically with its small, oval, dark green leaves. Fully deserving its coveted RHS Award of Garden Merit, you can be sure that this is a proven garden performer, guaranteed to be suitable for UK gardeners at every level of experience. You can therefore grow this plant confidence, for stunning displays for many years to come. Supplied as an established plant in a 9cm pot, ready for potting on.
