This fantastic architectural banana plant will create a great impact in any garden! Forming a dense bush with huge paddle fan-like leaves spreading gloriously out through the air, it will create wonderful shadows on your patio. Once established, the big leaves will unfurl as they emerge each year through the central trunk, and within 3-4 years you will have leaves over 1m long. Hailing from Japan, it loves sunshine but it is hardy to -6°C when protected with fleece over winter - outside it is frost tender and will not survive being frozen. This Japanese Hardy Banana is brilliant if planted into a large pot and will create a real tropical feel to your garden. Supplied as an established plant, approx. 30cm tall in a 1L pot, although can be a little larger on dispatch as they grow rapidally as the temperatures warm. Note - it does not actually produce edible bananas in the UK, it is a close cousin of comemrcial bananas, but they do not grow here in UK climates. Zelkova Serrata, also known as the Japanese Grey Bark Elm, is a wonderful starting point as you enter the magical world of bonsai, a revered art form in Japan and China for 2000 years. A delightful deciduous tree with a naturally upright growing habit, peeling grey bark and serrated glossy dark green leaves. Years of highly skilled training and pruning have contributed to this elegant miniature tree, already well established in a special ceramic bonsai pot. A native of Japan and China, Zelkova is happy in a cool, bright room away from heat sources. It will also thrive outdoors from early summer where it will soon acclimatise to cooler nights and warmer days. As a deciduous tree, it will lose its leaves in the autumn, when it can be brought back indoors for the winter. Trees that have been kept indoors year-round may retain some of their foliage over winter. Bonsai need regular watering as they can easily dry out. This is especially important if your Zelkova is growing outdoors, when the small amount of compost in the pot can dry out quickly on a warm, sunny day. Regular feeding between March and September is necessary to keep it growing healthily. A light trim will be required each Autumn to perfect the tree's shape. Don't let your bonsai sit in water as this can damage its roots.Where to put your Bonsai: During winter place your bonsai in the brightest place possible, avoiding artificial heat such as radiators. This close relative of the raspberry is really something special and is perfectly suited to UK gardens as it loves moist soils and will easily withstand the coldest winter weather. You'll get masses of fruit which ripen in July and August and have a rich raspberry taste which is enhance with a sherberty zing! They are delicious eaten fresh and make a great addition to summer puddings. This is an ideal plant to train against a wall or fence where it will quickly establish giving coils of attractive stems with pink hairs and bold lime green leaves. For a medium-sized shrub that will bring architectural interest to your garden all year long, Fatsia japonica is just the ticket! A spectacular evergreen shrub, it produces impressively large, serrated, glossy green leaves, which remain throughout the year, giving interest in all seasons. Also known as the Japanese Aralia, mature Fatsia plants produce exotic spikes of creamy white flowers, followed by attractive deep purple, almost black berries. Definitely a plant for novice gardeners and seasoned pros alike, Fatsia japonica will grow well in any garden and is a great plant for difficult shady areas where other plants struggle, in fact they perform best in light or dappled shade, making a glossy backdrop to other plants with their amazing palm-like leaves. Aucuba Japonica, commonly called Japanese laurel or gold dust plant, is a shrub native to forest soils of moist valleys, streams and near shaded moist rocks in China, Korea, and Japan. The glossy green leaves are heavily dusted with beautiful golden-yellow spots making the ‘Gold Dust Plant’ a cheery house plant, and a beautiful accent among other foliage plants. Aucuba Japonica varieties include both male and female plants that produce clusters of tiny purplish flowers in spring. If pollinated, the flowers are followed by bright red berries carried on the plant through the winter. So, move them outside during spring and summer if wish for this to happen. Indoors, you'll have easy success with this compact, upright shrub because it adapts well to indoor conditions. In fact, it doesn't need much attention to thrive and it grows well in a pot. Light and Water Keep it in a spot with bright indirect light. Some cool, direct morning sunlight is fine. Bright, filtered sunlight will help Gold Dust Plant keep its variegation. Don't move it outdoors unless you have a cool, shady spot for it. Keep the soil evenly moist from spring through fall. Then, cut back on watering in winter when growth has slowed. For indoors, although slow-growing, Gold Dust Plants will get tall and leggy over time. Prune the stems back hard in spring to keep Aucuba Japonica a manageable size indoors and to encourage branching. Cut stems at a 45° angle, just after a node (the place where a leaf or branch is attached to the stem). Use sharp pruners to avoid tearing the stems. Clean those beautiful spotted leaves to keep them dust-free. Wipe them off with a damp cloth, this will unclog the pores on the plant allowing them to break and prevent brown tips.
