One of the 'Magical' series of Hydrangeas, 'Allegretto' is an abundantly flowering, compact, multi-stemmed and beautifully formed mophead variety. 'Allegretto' certainly gets itself noticed, with its prolific display of large, rich, bright red summer flowers that fade to burgundy flushed with green. The foliage takes on red and orange tones in autumn before falling, leaving behind the faded flower heads that make a striking feature over the winter. Compact enough for container gardens and small spaces 'Allegretto' will grow into a loose mound of large leaves, making a statement wherever it is planted. When grown in a pot, this magnificent Hydrangea will bring a touch of drama to your patio or balcony. Being a mophead, the large flower heads consist of sterile coloured bracts which look like flowers and these are super as cut flowers for both summer colour and dried winter arrangements. Easy to grow and relatively compact - it reaches just 1.5m (5ft) high and wide - this is a hydrangea which can be grown by anyone whatever their level of experience. Supplied as an established plant in a 14cm pot, ready for planting.
Aquilegia flowers come in many shades of pink, purple, red and white, but the unusual 'Yellow Star' steals the show with its vibrant blooms. These lemon Granny's Bonnets appear in May, June and July to brighten up borders, rockeries or woodland gardens and attract pollinators. They also make superb cut flowers for those who want to bring the beauty of a cottage garden into the cottage itself. Columbines are extremely easy to grow, requiring only sunlight and rich, well drained soil. This makes the Aquilegia chrysantha 'Yellow Star' an excellent choice of hardy perennial.
Damp, dry or shaded areas are not the ideal place for a great many plants but Hostas are the ideal solution. They are easy to grow and will provide ground cover in the shaded border or you can make a feature of them in a container if you have areas of the patio that don't catch the sun. Hosta sieboldiana var. elegans is clump forming and has strong blue-green foliage with deep ridges that give texture to the display and during the summer months you can expect stems of pale lilac flowers too. The Giant Blue Hosta is a worthy RHS Award of Garden Merit holder and is the perfect plant for moist, damp, dark borders or difficult, dry shady borders.. Height: 100cm (39). Spread: 120cm (48).
This Granny's Bonnet is very different to the frumpy headwear that some grandmothers might be reported to own! Aquilegia vulgaris var. stellata 'Nora Barlow' is elegant, pretty and colourful. The hardy perennial typically flowers in May, whereby it produces exceptional pinky-red blooms, the petals of which are tipped with a contrasting yellow tone. The Columbine is reliably easy to grow, making it a firm favourite in traditional, sunny cottage gardens. Aquilegia clematiflora is also a great candidate for cut flower gardens, for it provides a great focal point for any indoor display. Height: 80cm (2'7). Spread: 45cm (1'6).
Beautifully fragrant, this elegant Dutch hybrid Easter Lily has a style all her own. Trumpet shaped flowers in a delicate shade of pink, with dusky pink centres that are particularly attractive to pollinating insects.
Aquilegia vulgaris 'William Guinness' is a striking variety of Columbine. From the shape of its flowers, it is easy to see why it is sometimes dubbed 'Granny's Bonnet', although the black blooms with white corolla are certainly more fashionable than the average pensioner's headwear! Indeed, these unusual colours give the plant the alternative name of Aquilegia 'Magpie' and you will certainly want to collect several of these hardy perennials which are attractive to beneficial garden insects such as bees and butterflies. After it has flowered in the late spring, the green foliage and appealing seedheads of Aquilegia 'William Guinness' remain an attractive addition to sunny or partially shady gardens throughout the season.
These Aquilegia plants are perfect for filling in the gap between your spring and summer bedding. Guaranteed to offer you eye catching displays in your borders and containers.
