A classic salad radish with crisp round roots of bright scarlet with moist, white flesh and a superbly sweet and mild flavour. Not only do they taste good, these nutritious beauties are an excellent source of vitamin C and potassium. A winner of the RHS Award of Garden Merit, this reliable and fast-growing variety is an ideal choice for the novice and experienced gardener alike - and great for encouraging children to garden as they will be rewarded with quick results. Easy to grow, 'Scarlet Globe' can be harvested within 4-6 weeks of sowing direct into their cropping position. Suitable for container growing as well as beds and borders, they like a sunny, sheltered position in well-drained, fertile soil, although will grow well in poorer soils too. They make an excellent 'marker' crop between rows of slower growing veg such as potatoes, peas, parsnip and onion, to be harvested before the main crop fills the space. Supplied as a packet of 700 (approx.) seeds ready to sow outdoors from February to September directly into their cropping position.
If you only grow one lettuce variety, surely this is the one to choose. True to its name, 'All Year Round' can be sown at any time of the year for harvesting over a long season. This heritage variety has been a firm favourite with British vegetable growers since the middle of the 19th century. A classic 'butterhead', it produces medium-sized lettuces with loosely formed heads that have soft-textured green outer leaves and compact, crisp, creamy yellow hearts. Succulent and sweet, and a good source of minerals and vitamins A and C, its flavour and goodness easily outclass supermarket-bought lettuce. Easy to grow, 'All Year Round' is a reliable cropper that is slow to bolt, so will crop over a long season. Regular sowings made every 2-3 weeks will ensure a continuous supply. Lettuces are typically ready to pick about 10 weeks after sowing. Supplied as a packet of 800 (approx.) seeds ready to sow indoors or outdoors in their cropping position.
Growing your own lettuce is so simple, and this mix of quality seeds gives fast results - either sown in the ground or in containers. It's an easy and environmentally friendly way of ensuring a constant supply of fresh, tasty salad leaves all through the summer - much cheaper and less wasteful than expensive bagged lettuce you buy in the supermarket. This superb mixed lettuce selection will produce a variety of different shapes, colours and textures throughout the season. The packet includes equal seed quantities of: Catalogna, Cocarde, Curled Red American, Grand Rapids, Red salad bowl, Rossa di Trento. Varieties grow at different rates, giving a different salad mix at every cut. Succulent and as fresh as you can get directly from your garden, these salad leaves are a good source of minerals and vitamins A and C; their flavour and goodness easily outclass shop-bought lettuce. Sow outdoors from May to August, where they are to crop, in fertile, moisture-retentive soil in a sunny or semi-shaded position. Harvest from April to October, picking a few leaves from each plant; this will stimulate further growth of new, young leaves and allow you to keep cutting up to 4 times. Or pull the lettuces whole once they have reached full maturity. Supplied as a packet of 775 (approx.) seeds ready to sow outdoors in their cropping position. Grows to 30cm by 30cm.
Narcissus Replete is a gorgeous and eye-catching double flowering variety that produces large, creamy apricot coloured blooms with dark orange centres that can reach over 10cm across. A real British favourite, Daffodils blowing in the breeze are a true sign that spring is approaching! With their distinctive flowers and sweet scent, they are a must-have for any garden and have been for hundreds of years. Plant them in pots, containers or straight in the ground this autumn for a fantastic display next spring and for years to come! They also make a fabulous cut flower - not least for their wonderfully strong fragrance - so be sure to plant enough to fill your vases several times over. Plant them in groups of 6-10 for maximum impact, in full sun or semi-shade, either on their own or with other spring-flowering bulbs of different colours for an eye-catching display. Supplied as a pack of 12 bulbs, size 12/14 ready for planting in the autumn.
If you're looking for a plant a little more out of the ordinary, then the Erythronium, or Dog's Tooth Violet, fits the bill magically. Best flowering in partial shade, they thrive in a woodland setting, under shrubs or deciduous trees where their beautiful, nodding star-shaped flowers hang daintily above their delightful marbled foliage. Erythroniums flower from March to April, dying down by June, so they can be grown under deciduous trees that come into leaf from late spring, preferring summer shade and fertile, humus-rich soil that is neither too wet nor too dry. Their common name refers to the shape of the bulbs with resemble canine teeth and which are easily damaged and often break if disturbed, so take care if you're moving them - in fact they're better off left alone where they will happily multiply, gradually forming a large clump. This wonderful variety provides the brightest yellow flowers, each flower stem carrying 4 to 5 large canary yellow blooms, each with a brown ring in the centre. The marbled foliage on this variety is a lovely added bonus! Height 20cm (8 in). Supplied as a pack of 5 bulbs, ready to plant out in autumn. Growing to a height of 25cm and width of 15cm.
