Dogs Tooth Violet (Erythronium Pagoda)
  • £3.99

If you're looking for a plant a little more out of the ordinary, then the Erythronium, or Dog's Tooth Violet, fits the bill magically. Best flowering in partial shade, they thrive in a woodland setting, under shrubs or deciduous trees where their beautiful, nodding star-shaped flowers hang daintily above their delightful marbled foliage. Erythroniums flower from March to April, dying down by June, so they can be grown under deciduous trees that come into leaf from late spring, preferring summer shade and fertile, humus-rich soil that is neither too wet nor too dry. Their common name refers to the shape of the bulbs with resemble canine teeth and which are easily damaged and often break if disturbed, so take care if you're moving them - in fact they're better off left alone where they will happily multiply, gradually forming a large clump. This wonderful variety provides the brightest yellow flowers, each flower stem carrying 4 to 5 large canary yellow blooms, each with a brown ring in the centre. The marbled foliage on this variety is a lovely added bonus! Height 20cm (8 in). Supplied as a pack of 5 bulbs, ready to plant out in autumn. Growing to a height of 25cm and width of 15cm.

Bletilla striata Hardy Orchid
  • £19.97

Orchids are one of the most popular plants in the UK and when you see their exotic blooms, it's easy to see why. The ones that we are used to seeing are houseplants and need to be grown inside - however there is a hardy orchid that you can grow in your own garden! Bletilla, or the Hyacinth Orchid, is one of the hardiest and easiest to grow garden orchids in the UK, slowly forming clumps which produce their gorgeously detailed violet-pink flowers in early summer. When grown in light, dappled shade, bletilla is quite unfussy so it can be grown in the ground under trees, in lawns, or even in patio pots (in shade). B. striata forms a clump of attractive, ribbed, sword-shaped leaves, with erect stems bearing many violet, fragrant, orchid-shaped flowers in spring and early summer. Blooms can reach up to 5cm wide, and each has a ruffled lip in a slightly darker shade, making them a stunning addition to your garden. Although hardy to -10, we recommend growing them in a container where they can be moved to a conservatory or unheated greenhouse during winter, and in mild areas a generous layer of dry mulch should be applied in autumn to provide protection for the corms. Alternatively, lift the corms in autumn and store it in a dry, frost-free place. One thing you need to remember is that bletilla should be kept dry during their winter dormancy, as they will not survive cold, wet soil. An easy to grow plant, which if left undisturbed, will naturalise and spread out to form good-sized clumps. Supplied as 3 x established plants in 9cm pots, ready for potting on or planting out when the soil warms, plants can reach 50cm high and 50cm wide. NB - Plants are dormant October to March so there may be no leaves on your plant when delivered.

Vitax 6x Pelleted Poultry Manure
  • £24.99

Sourced from Somerset farms this this unique fibrous product is produced from poultry waste. A traditional favourite among gardeners, pelleted chicken manure gives outstanding results. A 100% natural fertiliser pellet containing everything you need for growing. Ideal for all flowers, shrubs, vegetables, lawns, outdoor pot plants, trees and roses, this is not an artificial chemical fertiliser, it's poultry droppings in a convenient, easy to use form. Directions for Use Flowers, vegetables and soft fruit: Two or three handfuls (140-210g) per sq.m (4-6oz per sq.yd.) when planting and a good handful as a top dressing when required. Avoid direct, undiluted, contact with tender young plants, scattering pellets about 50-80cm (2-3in) away and work into surface of the soil. Repeat at 2-3-week intervals for heavy feeders such as tomatoes and beans. Roses: Use two or three handfuls to each rosebush when planting, one or two handfuls for established bushes when the buds begin to swell and again before the second flush of blooms. Lawns: Aerate well, scatter approximately a handful per square metre - brush well into the holes to enrich the soil under the turf. Water well. Do not use after applying other high nitrogen feeds - leave an interval of about two weeks.Liquid Feed - Dissolve one or two handfuls of pellets in 4.5 litres (1 gallon) of water to make a first-class liquid feed for all plants. Especially good for grow bag plants such as cucumbers and tomatoes. Tips: 6X can be stored from one season to the next, but if storing for later use, partially used buckets should be closed tightly and stored in a cool place. As with all garden products, sensible precautions should be taken use gloves, wash hands after use, wash vegetables before eating, etc. Store only in the original container and keep tightly closed and in a safe place. Safely dispose of the bucket when empty. It is made of recyclable polypropylene. If you are allergic to chickens or feathers, avoid directly handling 6X Manure or breathing the dust. Some pets like to eat manure and, whilst eating 6X will not normally cause a problem, it should be discouraged particularly in pets with a delicate digestion. Coverage The application rates quoted are for use as a rough guide. For general digging, feeding and soil conditioning, one bucket will treat about 36 sq.m of ground (44 sq.yds).
