Loved for its free standing habit and large, daisy-like blooms, Echinacea 'Magnus' is a compact variety of Cone Flower, perfect for growing at the front of borders amongst other perennials. Particularly attractive to bees and butterflies, the fiery-red, cone shaped centres of the flowers are surrounded by attractive pink, daisy-shaped petals. The seed heads look particularly attractive in winter and the seeds provide food for birds, so no part of this plant is left to waste. Ideal for use as cut flowers, with a flowering period from July right through summer. Height: 45cm (18). Spread: 30cm (12).
This small, low-growing shrub makes an excellent container plant, as its star-like bright blue flowers keep on coming for weeks and weeks from late spring right through the summer months. Lithodora diffusa 'Heavenly Blue' is also a fine performer in the rockery with evergreen leaves providing ground cover all year. Also known as Purple Gromwell, it holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit and is easy to grow in sun or shade. Height: 15cm (6). Spread: 60cm (24).
A lovely new variety, Geum 'Cosmopolitan' has a very pretty flower with ruffles of creamy-apricot petals veined with fine rose-pink lines and tinged with deeper pink at the tips. The petals surround a deep yellow centre and the flowers are held on tall stems above a clump of semi-evergreen foliage. The sweet nectar of this Avens is loved by bees and other pollinating insects. Planted in full sun, this is a good choice for the front of the border. Height: 60cm (24). Spread: 45cm (18).

Clematis 'Mikelite', which features deep mauve/purple blooms with a subtle dark stripe through each petal and creamy white anthers, looks outstanding when grown against dark green or even yellow shades. This hardy perennial climber is a modern viticella hybrid strain that is very easy to grow and maintain, flowering between July and September. It is perfectly suited to growing in pots and containers and can also be trained up a trellis or against a pergola; it is even happy to scramble through your other garden plants in the border.
