Most Magnolia are pink or shades thereof, so this rare and fabulously unique hybrid 'Yellow Bird' really is unusual. Magnolia Yellow Bird bears the most wonderful huge lemon-yellow flowers, sometimes streaked lime green, emerging just before the deep green leaves unfurl in the spring. Easy to grow, it's hardy to -15C (although best to avoid windy sites) and with just a little prune to shape will form a nice, low maintenance, medium sized specimen garden tree. Not just a plant for the garden, you can also plant up in a large patio container and place by a doorway, gateway or pathway where it will make a superb eye-catching feature, or on a patio where you can really enjoy the beauty. Supplied as an established plant in a 3Lpot,ready for immediate planting.Top Tips- Plant magnolias in a sunny or semi shaded position with protection from cold winds and hard spring frosts. Magnolias prefer a rich, moist, well drained, acid to neutral soil so incorporate plenty of well-rotted manure or garden compost to improve the soil prior to planting. Magnolia plants establish quicker when their roots are shaded so apply a mulch of rotted bark chips, manure or garden compost after planting, taking care not to mound it around the stem of the plant.Care Guide- When planting, choose your site carefully as magnolias dislike being moved.- Dig a hole twice the width of the roots, forking over the bottom to loosen the soil, and add some good quality fertiliser such as Blood Fish & Bone.- Aim to plant at the same depth as it was in the pot.- Holding the tree or plant upright in position with one hand, slowly backfill the hole with soil- Use your heel to compact the soil around the plant to ensure good contact around the roots.- If you're planting into pots, place some old rocks, stones or gravel in the bottom of the pot for drainage and ballast and use the best compost you can buy - an equal mix of ericaceous compost with John Innes No. 3 is ideal.- For tall trees and shrubs, we highly recommend using our Tree Planting Kit. Ornamental quinces bring a welcome flush of colour to the garden in spring, when their bare twigs become smothered in flowers before the glossy, dark green leaves appear. Ideal to train as a climbing shrub against a wall or fence or placed at the back of a border where their spring blossom can really shine. Incredibly easy to grow, Japanese quince will tolerate most soil types and aspects, including shade, which makes them invaluable for brightening dull corners of the garden and being a wide spreading shrub with thorny branches, it makes a perfect security hedge to deter unwanted visitors. Additionally, they have also shown good resistance to honey fungus - ideal if your garden is susceptible. Not just a pretty face, quinces develop apple-like fruit with a distinctive, sweetly fragrant aroma when ripe and can be cooked and made into jelly, making them the perfect decorative addition to any grow your own project. Supplied as an established plant in a 2L pot, ready for immediate planting.Top Tips- Flowering quince plants are low maintenance, but they do benefit from regular pruning in late spring/early summer to keep them flowering well.Care GuidePlanting Advice for your Flowering Quince:- Plant in any moist, well drained garden soil, in full sun or semi-shade.- Water your potted plant well.- Dig a hole a little deeper and 3 x wider than the nursery pot.- Add a soil conditioner such as well-rotted manure to the earth removed from the hole if necessary.- Remove the plant from its pot and tease out a few of the roots.- Sprinkle mycorrhizal fungi (Rootgrow) into the base of the hole and onto the roots.- Place your plant in the hole at the same level at the pot.- Refill the hole with the earth removed (backfilling).- Firm in the soil with your heel, avoiding the root ball.- Water well and mulch around the base of the plant with a collar, compost, gravel, bark etc.Aftercare Advice for Chaenomeles Quince:- Drought tolerant once established, keep plants well-watered in their first year.Pruning Advice for Chaenomeles:- After flowering, prune side-shoots to five or six leaves and remove crossing stems.
