Vinca minor, better known as the periwinkle is a wonderful, low growing evergreen perennial with glossy green foliage on long stems that will root where they touch the ground. Between April and September beautiful, five petalled, star shaped flowers appear in shades purple, blue and white scattered across the carpet of foliage. They are wonderful for brightening up dull parts of the garden and provide excellent groundcover, helping to keep weed in check. For something different, try growing periwinkles in hanging baskets so that the stems can trail over the sides. Although they flower best in sunshine, they do very well in partial shade and will even tolerate growing in shadow. Supplied as 12 plug plants, ready to be potted on or planted out into your garden. You'll receive 3 each of the following: Vinca minor 'Bowles' - Bright lavender blue flowers, and a holder of the RHS Award of Garden Merit, growing to 15 cm (6 in) in height and spreading 60 cm (2 ft). Vinca minor 'Colada' - A lovely periwinkle with dotted with white flowers, reaching 15 cm (6 in) in height and spreading 1 m (3 ft). Vinca minor 'Verino' - A beautiful, periwinkle with rich, deep magenta flowers that grows to 20 cm (8 in) in height and spreads 50 cm (20 in). Vinca minor 'Hawaii' - Stunning blue flowers with a purple tinge. Very unusual for a periwinkle. Reached a height of 20 cm (8 in) and will spread to 1 m (3 ft).
Periwinkles are invaluable garden perennials for providing colourful groundcover, especially in shady areas, with low growing stems dotted with star shaped flowers. Vinca minor 'Alba' forms a mat glossy, oval evergreen leaves on long prostrate stems that bear lovely, pure white flowers with broad petals from March until September. Although quick to form weed-suppressing groundcover, 'Alba' is not as vigorous as its Vinca major relatives, so it won't get out of control or become invasive. It will grow almost anywhere, from full sun to the shadiest places beneath trees. The stems will easily root where they touch the ground as the plant spreads, perfect for brightening dull areas where little else will thrive, and ideal for keeping weeds under control. Easy to grow, extremely hardy and very low maintenance, requiring just an occasional trim to help to keep the foliage dense, 'Alba' is the perfect Periwinkle. It makes excellent edging for a pond, and looks great trailing out of hanging baskets and patio pots too! Supplied as an established plant in a 9cm pot, ready to plant straight, growing to a height of 25cm (10in) and spreading to 1.5m (5ft).

Introducing your next favourite plant - the fabulously fragrant-flowered foxglove tree, Paulownia fortunei Fast Blue (R) 'Minfast' The foxglove tree is one of those plants that always draws gasps of amazement when in full flower, it really is a sight to behold in bloom. It's a tree that we're always getting asked if we stock, so we tracked down this garden gem and this is your opportunity to get one of these sought-after beauties for your own garden. 'Fast Blue' grows rapidly (up to 1m (3ft) in a year) and will flower reliably, sometimes in the following year after planting. One of the bluest of the foxglove trees and bred especially for its colour, the flowers are widely funnel-shaped, foxglove-like, very fragrant, deep violet purple outside and almost creamy white inside with yellow throat. Held on erect stems just like our native foxgloves. Flowers have a strong vanilla fragrance and are produced profusely in May and the panicles of trumpet-shaped velvety blooms are a reliable nectar source - a magnet for pollinating insects - giving rise to its other name of the Honey Plant. Slightly more compact and less vigorous than the more readily available Paulownia 'tomentosa', this is a tree more suited to our gardens, and has been given the RHS Award of Garden Merit, so you can be sure that it will perform! Plants are also notable for their large, heart-shaped, mid green, deciduous leaves (up to 20cm across), which are very hairy underneath and a feature in their own right after the flowers have faded, continuing to give you garden interest throughout the seasons. Easy to grow in a warm, sunny position, sheltered from strong winds in order to protect flower buds that need to overwinter and also to prevent emerging leaves from damage. Paulownia excels as a specimen tree and is fully hardy down to -25C. When planting, select an appropriate spot with enough space to allow your plants to grow. If you wish to grow Paulownia for the large leaves, then pollarding the tree will produce better growth, although at the expense of flowers.
