With a bamboo-like habit, several upright stems emerge from a tight clump of leaves which in spring and summer is mid-green with the odd reddish or purplish tinge on new shoots. It produces small white flowers, but it really comes into its own as the temperatures drop in autumn. The leaves turn spectacular bonfire orange red, perfect for Halloween and autumn colour, and keep getting darker red as it gets colder. The flowers have given way to berries, much like our own much-loved holly, which themselves get redder and redder too, so the whole plant is a frenzy of colour in full winter. A great choice for a splash of lemon yellow in a sunny spring border, Geum 'Banana Daiquiri' has an enchanting little flower with a swirl of yellow anthers surrounded by the most delicate lemon yellow petals, each one lined with almost-transparent veins. The flower grows on a tall fuzzy stem above the neat clump of semi-evergreen leaves. This little Avens looks good at the front of the border and makes a nice cut flower in a spring arrangement. This compact bushy variety bears a profusion of single purple blooms with contrasting red-pink sepals over a particularly long period. Bananas have become very popular in the last few years, for their large architectural leaves as opposed to their fruit! The Red Abyssinian Banana is a relative newcomer, and brings with it a stunning colour addition - the huge paddle shaped leaves that can reach 75cm long in a season are heavily veined burgundy red, and in full sun the leaf edges have a very red tinge. Grow in large heavy pots for stability, in full sun and warm spots, and feed and water well in June-August when they grow quickly. Borderline hardy, so in late Autumn, allow leaves to die back and cut stem to 20cm tall, and bring somewhere frost free till following May. Keep dry, and new leaves should quickly emerge next year.
