Nandina Fire Power
  • £9.99

Nandinas, also known as Heavenly Bamboos, are amongst the best shrubs you can grow for spectacular winter colour from both leaves and berries. With its bamboo-like habit, Nandina 'Fire Power' is a beautiful and compact, producing several upright stems from a tight clump of foliage which is mid-green during spring and summer, tinged with red and purple on new shoots. It produces clusters of small white flowers in summer, that become shiny red berries in autumn, which is the time that the real show begins as the leaves change colour. The evergreen leaves become a spectacular bonfire orange and red, for stunning autumn colour which transforms to deeper maroon as it gets colder and the berries change to brighter and brighter red, so the whole plant is a frenzy of colour throughout winter. An impressive specimen when grown in a pot, 'Fire Power' also looks superb growing in borders, where its bright winter colour is particularly welcome. Supplied as an established plant in a 12 cm pot, ready to plant out, growing to a height and spread of 50 cm (20 in).

Nandina Gulf Stream
  • £14.97

One of the finest shrubs you can grow for spectacular winter colour from both leaves and red berries - this is a plant that should be in everyone's winter garden. Also known as the sacred or heavenly bamboo, Nandina is totally winter-hardy and tough as old boots! With a bamboo-like habit, several upright stems emerge from a tight clump of leaves which in spring and summer is mid-green with the odd reddish or purplish tinge on new shoots. It produces small white star shaped flowers, but it really comes into its own as the temperatures drop in autumn. The leaves turn spectacular bonfire red and bronze, perfect for Halloween and autumn colour, and keep getting darker red as it gets colder. The flowers have given way to berries, much like our own much-loved holly, which themselves get redder and redder too, so the whole plant is a frenzy of colour in full winter. Great as a specimen in a pot, so you can move it near the door to lift your spirits on dark days, or equally at home in the soil in a mixed border planting. In Japan, it is traditionally grown near a door, so if you awake from a nightmare, you can tell your Nandina about your dream so that it cannot harm you. Supplied as 3 x established plants in 9cm pots ready for planting out or potting into your favourite container.

Also known as Heavenly Bamboo, Nandina will bring bright and dazzling colour to your borders or patio pots. Nandina is totally invaluable during the winter when there's little colour around. As it's evergreen, Nandina retains its foliage throughout the year and depending on where you plant it. In a bright and sunny spot, the foliage will take on much brighter tones, however, if you plant yours in a shaded area, the green of 'Lemon and Limes' leaves will take on a deeper and darker tone.
