Bring a warm Mediterranean feel to your garden this summer with this fantastic standard olive bush. These well-established plants have been professionally grown with a wonderful ball of foliage aloft an elegant stem. Despite their Mediterranean heritage, olives are surprisingly tough and will happily grow in the UK down to -8C in winter, although best of you can protect them a little. With its neatly shaped, evergreen grey-green foliage, this olive is perfect in a border or patio pot they will also look great in a pot in a conservatory. They love hot, sunny spots and thrive in free-draining soil. They produce small, but insignificant creamy flowers in spring, which self-pollinate, and may produce small fruits in hot, dry summers with plenty of time to ripen. They look so exotic and Mediterranean though, you should grow them anyway. Olives are low maintenance, easy to grow and very slow growing - ideal for small gardens or busy gardeners. Great value and will add a touch of class to your patio. All our Olives are sourced from specialist growers who are regularly inspected and tested for plant pests and diseases, including the new disease threat Xylella. With arching deep red sword-shaped leaves, the Cordyline 'Red Star' is a splendid plant for the patio, contrasting beautifully with the more familiar greens of other plants and bringing a tropical feel to the garden. A native of New Zealand, Cordyline 'Red Star' is a compact, evergreen foliage plant, with glorious arching, bronze-red leaves and, on mature plants, branches of sweetly fragranced, ivory-white flowers in summer. An ideal specimen for growing in pots on patios and balconies, why not experiment and make a real tropical paradise by growing them alongside other tropical plants such as cannas, and broad-leaved Zantedeschias. Over time, your cordyline will grow and branch into a small, evergreen tree resembling a palm - hence cordyline's other name of cabbage palm - creating a unique look all year-round and for many years, adding colour to your garden when all else begins to fade. Easy to grow, cordylines need little maintenance and pruning is limited to removing any dead leaves in the spring. Able to withstand a -7C winter, we do however suggest frost protection with fleeces or wrapping or bringing it into a garage or porch during the coldest months. Plant in a pot and grow outside through the summer before moving to a protected space such as a greenhouse or conservatory for the winter. As plants mature they become more frost hardy so can be left outside in all but the coldest weather and will withstand all but severe frost. A tall-growing, evergreen and vigorous bamboo, Pseudosasa japonica produces a dense growth of hollow canes with arrow-shaped, shiny green leaves. Spikes of greeny-brown flowers can appear at any time of year. Forming attractive and long-lasting clumps, it is ideal for hedges or screening - or even as a windbreak for patio or barbecue areas. One of the fastest-growing bamboos, it is slowly invasive if left unchecked, so best in large pots, or with plenty of space in lawns. If you are planting near a wall or foundations, remember to use a physical barrier. It is tolerant of hot summers and cold winters, although leaves can be damaged by extreme cold and wind. Damaged leaves can be removed in spring as the new shoots emerge. Very hardy, it needs little care, but make sure your plants are well-watered in summer and don't let them dry out if you are growing yours in a pot.
